I think I finally get it: the "Saw" movies are cinematic meth. The camerawork and editing is jittery and paranoid. They broker in excitable themes that probably seemed profound at their conception but in the harsh light of day are actually quite mundane. The set design, lighting, and color all leave the taste of Clorox in your mouth. And they are very, very bad for you. Sitting through five sequels of a shitty nu-horror franchise isn't normal... but on "Saw" it is.

I was expecting the torture porn that this series' reputation is built upon, but this ended up being a psychological thriller and a good one at that. Seeing the two leads piece things together and trying to outsmart the serial killer is pretty entertaining and they deliver the performances well enough. Parts of this reminded me of Se7en, which isn't a bad thing. You can definitely feel the small budget at times, and one has to wonder if these men really deserve this. Still, this is great.

The acting in this leaves a lot to be inspired, especially from the two leads. The movie makes it for it with a fantastic atmosphere and slow unraveling of it's intricate plot. There are some legitimately tense moments in this movie and the twist is clever. My dislike of most of the Saw franchise does not keep this movie from being creative and well made.

I think this original one is a tight, clever thriller. I have since fallen in love with the style that James Wan brings to each of his films. The only thing missing was what should have been Cary Elwes last line, "As you wish."

Better than I had expected, with some tense and unnerving scenes. But honestly some of the character decisions are so stupid and unbelievable that it becomes irritatingly obvious that the film just wants to find reasons to keep the torture going without bothering with the context.

Has anyone actually seen such bad acting in such a big hollywood movie ?? Cary Elwes was terrible as was the twist at the end. Of course no one saw it comming, but I think they put the twist at the end to disguise what a bad movie this really is. The scenario was so terrible, characters miraculously remebering what happened to them (BAM !!, another flashback)... This is just violence for no reason, there is no underlying theme, .... a bad B-film sold as a big budget production.

Saw a 20th Anniversary screening, having not seen it since it initially released in theaters. It holds up pretty well, even knowing the "twist." Some of the acting is not great, there are some badly jarring camera effects, and plot holes if you think too long about it, but it manages a good balance of suspense and mystery, and keeps you intrigued for the entire runtime.

Never understood how this first one never resonated with critics, especially compared to other horror films, but this has to at least go down as one of the more influential horror films of all time. It's pretty self contained, creepy, and if you're stomach can handle it obviously, quite gory. Not the biggest fan in using gore to push your movie, but Wan actually makes it feel like it's in the background, unlike the others. On top of that twist, Saw borderlines on a classic for me.

Got some nice ideas, but deserved a better director. By the way, what is this poor and silly editing doing here? 2021 REWATCH: hasn't aged well -- freaky, 90s MTV-esque montages lol. Although influential as torture porn horror, pretty by the numbers procedural thriller - vibe is totally post-Seven-ish, heavily relying on rotten, dirty interiors and unlikable characters - whose main attraction is the horror that never actually happens and lazy backstories left to be fully in the twisty ending

When I first saw this I was pretty 'blah' about it. I don't mind gore in horror movies, but I'm not a big fan of it in the torture outlook. Now this movie seems like a walk in the park compared to the excessive crap that's been released since. Combine my total disinterest in these types of movies with bad acting and a relatively stupid script and you have this turd of a film. At least this one was so bad that I didn't have to waste my time trying any of the sequels out.

A secondhand Se7en, meaning: the concept itself is solid, but nothing else is. There is some ridiculously bad dialogue (which leads naturally to bad acting) and stupid undercranking (which leads naturally to bad editing). The more the story "unravels", the less it makes sense, the less scary it is and the less you care.

When you wake up in fucked up bathroom with your leg chained to a wall and you can't remember how you got there, it usually means you've just had a cracking good piss-up the night before. The fact this movie doesn't celebrate that makes it a bit of a killjoy.

Saw was pretty much what I expected from it: a pretty boring "horror" film about some people stuck in chains that wasn't really scary at all, had a plot that made little to no sense, featured annoying music, and mediocre acting at best. It promised to be the next great serial killer thriller since se7en. That it was definitely NOT. I'm not the biggest fan of the Saw franchise, but this is undeniably the best of what became a tired and terrible franchise. The first movie actually manages to build a good amount of tension, features some strong character acting from Elwes and Glover, and a twist that you really don't see coming. I also like that it is fairly restrained in the gore that it does show and that makes those scenes much more effective. After this one and James Wan departed, the franchise took a nosedive sadly.

It's a solid thriller that borrows heavily from other films (Se7en and Cube most notably) but still has a hell of an original central concept at its core. But it has some big problems: first, the room of the death game is never allowed to feel properly claustrophobic because the film keeps cutting outside it and, second, how the game plays out, despite supposedly being the work of a mastermind villain, is particularly reliant on people acting uncharacteristically stupidly. Enjoyable but weak.

I put this off for years because I always assumed it was overly gory torture porn, and... well.... much like how the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre has a reputation for being more bloody than it actually is, Saw isn't nearly as awful in the torture porn department. Gets overshadowed by how often they were just pumping these out, but this one holds up. I don't particularly think it's making some profound point or anything, but it's twisty and tied together story works remarkably well, with a final twist in the pantheon of those great earned twists. I do think Wan gets way better, cinematically, later in his career with this one definitely having a kind of numetal music video vibe.

A mostly boring and tedious affair. There are some decent ideas at play, it's such a shame they are so half-baked and easily disregarded. You can see some glimpses into James Wan's ability to direct large-budget horror films instead of this low budget trash. I'll give Tobin Bell some credit for being genuinely committed to his role. When this film chooses to display some visceral horror it works well because it is used sparingly and for character-effect and not for cheap gore effects.

This first film feels distinctly different than the others, which is mostly a good thing, as this is probably the strongest psychological thriller in the series. Whether it deserves to be or not, "Saw" has become the iconic horror classic it is for a reason, a micro-budgeted miracle of a film that, even though its overall quality is debatable to a sizable degree (often truly awful), proves that sometimes the best filmmakers can do so much more with so little, more than many genre-defining directors could do with millions of dollars and a studio behind it. Sometimes one room, two people, and impossible situation is all you need to terrify a generation.

Far less gory than expected and much more of a crime procedural, Wan and Whannell's first effort is nonetheless an aesthetic touchstone for the genre during the bleak and traumatic War on Terror years when torture, terrorism, and industrial warfare were subjects of international fixation. The chaos of the non-linear narrative and morally ambiguous characters only bolster the correlation, but the hokey script and abrasive editing choices make it hard to watch--and not in the way it's intended.
