When my family first got a DVD player each person in our family got one movie to go with it. I got Spaceballs, my mom got Monty Python and the Holy Grail, my dad got Quigley Down Under. I have a very special place in my heart for all 3 of those movies. My sister got this. This movie blows. The 20 points all come from the black dude teaching me how to sit in a chair all cool like.

Race guilt movie for goodthinkers. I do not comment on the politics, just that this is manipulative propaganda and I get no enjoyment out of that.

Old as the hills genre entry finds a modest power in its specifics, especially Stiles and Thomas who give better (and more authentic) performances than the material requires. Film works best charting their evolving relationship, which might hew to conventions, but still feels tangible and real. A half-hearted study of race relations makes the slightness of the material noticeable as the second act segues to the third; the climactic moments are also a little too overstated to be satisfying.

A delightful guilty pleasure that is just good enough to not be that guilty. It brushes past ideas of grief, race, and art in an interesting way. And also, sweet high school romance between two kids who hit it off because they are the two smartest kids in class.

I love Julia Stiles, even though most of her movies are kind of lousy. My niece really likes this, and she's thirteen, so I thought I really should at least check it out. Aaaand it's fine. I can see why a thirteen-year-old girl would like it. I thought the Stiles character's relationship with her father was the most interesting part of the film; it gave the movie one extra little dimension that I appreciated. I can't wait until Julia's too old to do high-school and college movies.

Not horrible romance about an an interracial relationship. It does have cliches, but appealing lead performances help it rise above the normality of terrible teenage movies.

Loved it. Not perfect & falters occasionally, yet stunning for a genera movie that takes all that junk & recycles it with style. Everyone manages to make these characters & their feelings seem real, the father being the weakest. Good fun with race, one amazing continuity error with facial injuries, & less dancing than you might like from a dance movie giving the scenes an interruptive feel. Still, I'm sucked in.

This movie sets out to prove that white girl can't have no soul unless she gets with a conflicted and talented young black man She learns some trite played out choreography, she becomes less of a tight ass and as a result saves him from a dangerous life in the hood.
