Within the first 10 minutes the line, "I have orgasms. He has wargams." was said. At the end of the film Oliver Stone wipes his ass with any shred of nuance he had left by giving us arguably the most heavy handed line of 2012. Both situations made me burst out laughing at how absolutely terrible they were. They also embodied this movie pretty well.

Savages shows that a film Directed by Oliver Stone no longer means anything. The film plods along at a dismal pace and just builds up to nothingness. The script is dreadful and at times hilariously bad. The cast is hit and miss also. Kitsch and Taylor-Johnson are a poor pairing, Travolta's career is sadly a lost cause and Lively is simply included for eye candy. However Del Toro is an enjoyable carbon copy of his usual self. Savages isn't an awful film, its just a pointless one. Wargasms..?

I suppose if we all just agree that the Oliver Stone of the 80s and early 90s is lost and gone forever, then we can stop having these expectations that are torn to shreds with each new release. Savages isn't BAD, it just isn't all that good. The veteran actors are great, while all three of the young leads spout some pretty terrible stuff. The violence is there, but the story just skims along the surface and gives us little insight into the odd love story. Eh.

The cinematic equivalent to a runaway train whose conductor entertains the soon-to-be victims just enough to stay on the train, instead of jumping off. Del Toro is wonderful as that metaphorical conductor, but there is not much else about Savages that I can praise. The only aspect weaker than the awful dialogue is Blake Lively's lackluster performance. I found myself asking WHY they wanted to rescue her *crickets chirp*. Oh! I did not hate John Travolta in this. So, that's good. I think.

There are numerous memorable scenes, some cool violence and a generally energetic, raw vibe throughout the duration, but oh my god does this movie shit the bed in the final 10 minutes or so. It's a Lost-level catastrophe of an ending. I realize that opinions are subjective and all, but seriously, the ending of this movie is as close to objectively bad as anything I've seen on the big screen this summer. Still, Salma Hayek and Benicio Del Toro are pretty great the villains, very entertaining.

While I loved the two male leads, I couldn't get into O, whether due to character traits (thought she came across as obnoxious) or Lively's portrayal (never had a sense of dread from her over her capture save a line or two). The "wargasms" line was so silly. Not sure how I feel about the cocktease ending. So much love for del Toro, the best Hayek since "Frida", and the best mainstream Stone flick since "Nixon". Many details felt unresolved/tacked on. But see it if you like drugs, sex & violence.

Savages is both underwhelming & irritating, as the film toys with sex, drugs & violence, but fails to deliver an engaging film. The first 15 min involve Lively's nasally voice gratingly narrating exposition, and her performance never gets much better. Kitsch & Taylor-Johnson share the depth of a single character, existing for Stone to film a shockingly timid threesome. The middle of the film picks up a bit, but the twin ending was an atrocious cop-out. Not much style, and even less substance.

it's one of those films that maybe it's not terrible but you sit back afterwards and ask "what was the point of any of that?". the story lacks tension, the characters lack life, and the whole thing lacks emotion. and it has the gall to go on for over two hours... del toro was enjoyable and travolta goes to town with what little he's given. but there's no spark of chemistry in this bizarre love triangle that's supposed to be the crux of the whole film.

The positive thing is that the script allows the actors room to shine on their own. The 3-way romance is a melodramatic gimmick. Two best bros in a drug business sharing a girl isn't interesting it's just completely redundant. As the title seems to imply everyone is despicable and unlikable so why should you give a fuck? It's an overwrought tale with lame dialog for unbearable stretches. The bookend narrative by Lively is piss poor. The ending was fucking stupid. Del Toro is amazing though.

A great reminder of why I dislike Oliver Stone's style - it's too... stylish, for the sake of being stylish. The handheld camera, the over-saturation of shooting, lightning and other techniques, the almost frantic cuts - it's too much and tires me out quickly. I don't know what the problem with acting is in Stone's films either. All the actors seem detached from each other - not in a good way, but lacking any chemistry and any spark. I fail to relate to any of them. I might be missing something.

Vacuous slutty annoying blonde (think Paltrow on steroids) gets herself kidnapped by nasty drug cartel led by Salma Hayek, who is about as frightening as Felicity Kendal, and as stupid as, well, Blake Lively. Two charisma free guys worried they wont get laid so often, decide to free her by kidnapping Hayeks daughter and offering a trade. Due to nothing much going on, we have to have two endings where one is 'real' (nothing happens) and the other 'imagined' (yep, something happens!). Stupid.

Like Natural Born Killers, Stone's star-studded ultraviolent, over-the-top summertime rampage for the new millennium flaunts a schizophrenic style, all while ultimately packing a brass-knuckled punch in the gut. The point is, no matter how trite and heavy-handed it is, or how gimmicky it feels, the messy, fearless Emperor of Excess is back, after a disconcerting hiatus in the world of neutered PG-13 sanitization.

A lot of the writing is just not as smart as it thinks it is. Pretty much all the characters are really unlikable... We're supposed to just root for the two main guys due to their apparent disinclination to let their mutual girlfriend die. But even that's asking a little much when we've seen them sit around getting high when the lives of themselves and others are in obvious immediate danger.

Horrible. Characters lack definition. The story is an excuse for excess. There is no reason to care about Ophelia. She's trying to escape the materialistic life her parents instilled but she has no personality. Aside from being a blonde surfer babe who likes to toke, what reason do Chon and Ben have to be with her? Obviously they want to rescue her because they love her, but what about her attracted them beyond surface details? That's all the movie is: a thin surface wrapped in frenetic style.

Oliver Stone is the new Tony Scott. Stone realizes this, so he went out and hired Scott's cinematographer. Sooooooooooooooooooo disappointed. I like most of the cast and Oliver Stone has certainly created some memorable films in the past, but this was just an icky movie. And, seriously, after watching Blake Lively sleepwalk through Green Lantern and then give a performance equal to that of watching grass grow (yet less exciting and charismatic), it's a wonder she gets cast in anything (I'm assuming it's the boobs). This movie wasn't as good as advertised. Sure, it had some enjoyable parts. Especially once the action gets amped up. Sadly Blake Lively's performance kind of messed up the film. Don't get me wrong, she is a beautiful girl and she does well on other things, I just didn't care for her in this. The two male leads did well together, although one of them looked like Bradly Cooper. I'm glad the ending changed because the first one made me actually yell at the tv because it was so stupid.

I understand why many won't like this film, but I enjoyed it. It's very classical directed, and at some point it has a Tarantino feel over it. For me the weakest point of the movie was parts of the script. Some of the dialog were just plain boring and felt unnecessary. I heard jokes about a wargasm, remarks about a buddhist and an ex-Seal that share a beautiful and moron girl and the best herb growers in US, all narrated by this same chick, and I had nothing to complain, because I realized Stone exchanged his political concerns for slick, cheesy and corny filmmaking. Savages is Robert Rodriguez trying to remake Natural Born Killers -- with all those diagonal shots --, or actually Stone trying to look cool again. Such a pleasant disaster, this is.

The story/tone is exactly the same as in the books of Winslow ( who also co wrote the script), the acting/directing is average but fine, and the film plays out well, though perhaps 15/30 minutes too long. As an off again on again fan of Oliver Stone, I think this is probably his best, including Platoon. Belongs at the pinnacle of the war on drugs genre along with Blow and Traffic. Casting, screenplay, savage action, dialogue, message and even the very innovative ending are all excellent. Del Toro does the sadistic, if not too bright, enforcer as well as it can be done, and Travolta as the glib, asshole DEA agent deserves the jerk-of-the-year award. But Salma Hayek delivers the most profound line

Advertised as an over-the-top thrill ride, it's really a thriller rooted in strategy and character--and perhaps it's better that way. Top-notch acting across the board--Kitsch, Johnson, Lively, Del Toro, Travolta, and Hayek all turn in superb work. Oliver Stone tells this savage tale in customarily vivid style, and co-wrote the tight, twisty script to good effect--the infamous ending doesn't completely work, but it's not enough to dampen the whole. Not quite a great film, but a very good one.

Sometimes a little too corny with the dialogue, Savages at times focuses too heavily on trying to be different from films of the same nature. In doing so, some of the dialogue just seems forced. Beyond that minor flaw, I thought this film had good R-Rated violence and most of the characters were well written. A few minor changes, and Savages easily could have been a much more menacing film.
