I can't really say this was a bad film because there's clearly talent here, it has interesting style and Godard is trying to say something. Unfortunately I didn't really get what he was trying to say and the film just kind of fluttered by. The moments were interesting but ultimately fleeting and unrewarding.

Even in the same year as Raging Bull, Melvin and Howard, Dressed to Kill and The Long Riders it was still the freshest, most thrilling movie to behold.

Ah, the beginning of Godard's "seagull period" as i like to call it, and probably one of the most approachable from this era, and certainly the most overtly visually "poetic", although that said i don't think it's actually as nice looking as some of his films that followed, even if it's still one of his best. The titular slow motion effects are perhaps overused and slightly dated (even if these sequences essentially invent 90% of Wong Kar-Wai's oeuvre), as is the uncharacteristic soundtrack.

A perfect bridge between the playful but accessible Godard of the sixties, and the formally and narratively abstract Godard of the 80s. The visuals are consistently beautiful (especially those slow motion sequences), and the three-part structure works well. It doesn't hit me on a gut level the way some of Godard's films do, but this strikes me as a remarkable and remarkably consistent achievement.

I could tell you what happens in this movie, but I couldn't tell you what it's about... and I'm not certain Godard could, either. At least he keeps the political polemic out of this one, for the most part, and doesn't have quite so many scenes of people reading straight out of a text (the worst way to make a point, in my opinion). It's not as cold and clinical as a lot of his post-1965 work, and if the moments don't seem to form any coherent whole, at least they're mostly interesting moments.

A film of extraordinary formal sophistication, which is to be anticipated from this period of Godard's work. These complex arrangements are experimental but still accessible. Thank God for this persistent stimulation, because the characters and entire narrative strategy were so colourless and dry.

A cold look at what appears to be Godard's sexual implications of the higher class male dominance and young females. Perhaps personal, and critical of it's time. Depicts male behavioral instincts without holding back and is uncomfortable but all together interesting.
