There are those that say "German comedy" is an oxymoron, and this is not exactly a compelling refutation of that notion. Still, curiously watchable, and there's clearly a forceful personality overseeing the utterly absurd goings-on.

Bizarre surrealist comedy in which Volker Spengler's character is sexually attracted to flies, Kurt Raab's thinks he's the German poet Stefan George reincarnate, and everyone screams [or, maybe, -shrieks-] ~50% of their lines. I had no idea what the hell was going on, and I didn't get much out of it... actually, I had the feeling that by ending with the same Artaud quotation as in the beginning RWF was beating me over the head: "IDIOT! U DON'T UNDERSTAND THE PROFUNDITY!!!" Still, it was amusing.

Sort of Fassbinder does screwball, which is about as insane and great as it sounds, although the sheer nonstop over-the-top franticness is so relentless it threatens to become shrill and overbearing (which i guess is kind of the point). Aesthetically, he's at the top of his game (showcasing Ballhaus' cinematography at it's most outlandishly baroque) and overall it's one of his best films, simultaneously kind of hilarious and one of his most damning (if cynical) critiques of human cruelty.

I'm assuming this was fueled by massive amounts of cocaine. It's a hoot.

Very conspicuously a stab at comedy, but a definite testament that German comedy is a contradiction in terms. Which is sort of what makes this interesting to watch, for a while. Eventually it does get grating, and I much prefer to watch Fassbinder being serious, for sure. Shows body parts you still don't often see in proper cinema.

The comedy actually aged well. Fassbinder has a boorish but unique sense of humor

Among the most outlandish and garish of Fassbinder treats. The final bits seem wrong, but the rest comes off very well.
