A self-absorbed Black American fashion model on a photo shoot in Africa is spiritually transported back to a plantation in the West Indies where she experiences first-hand the physical and psychic horrors of chattel slavery, and eventually the redemptive power of community and rebellion as she becomes a member of a freedom-seeking Maroon colony. On the one hand, its portrayal of the pagan Africans is dishonest glorification. On the other, it's fascinating that the film touches upon the clash of cultures within an enslaved context where it wasn't simply the violence and abhorrent conditions that harmed the slaves of that era. While obtuse and bizarre in its direction, it's a film that's elevated by this style in seeking to observe the psychology of slavery than its physical tragedies, even if its execution is sometimes awkward.

I didn't understand a thing that went on but for some reason I loved almost everything about this film. Gerima is one of the most underrated filmmakers of all time.
