Saloum

There's plenty amiss in this film. From start to finish it seems very amateurish, editing is awful, everything seems messy and lacks depth overall. Expected much more based on some critics here. Need to watch something else now.

I like the blending of genres, that really drove a lot of this. It's also a crisp 84 minutes so it doesn't have time to drag on. Stylish, the mysticism of it is handled well. Performed admirably all around with a good sense of direction. I might have given this a 90 but the action is a bit of a let down, especially after all the build, and the brotherhood of these three wasn't explored with as much depth as it could have been. But I was really entertained, that was enough to consider it great.

Deserves respect for being so free-thinking and carving out its own niche, but the story and characters are underwhelming, the symbolism is dispensible, and the "entity" scenes look a bit cheap directorially. I sort of feel like Nicolas Winding Refn should have made this.

So look ... the fact that this is a "Shudder Original" should tell you that this is going to turn into a horror film. It turns into a very mediocre horror-action outing that is a shame because it means a colourful, interesting action flick turns into a C-tier John Carpenter rip-off ... this African mercenaries meet "Ghosts of Mars". I really have no clue why this is so well reviewed.

While flawed, “Saloum” is a captivating horror film that utilizes its supernatural elements to comment on the lasting effects of war on a community. Its authentic energy, solid performances, and tension-filled direction make it a worthwhile watch, even if some of its elements are not as polished as they could be.

From Dusk Til Dawn with traumatised former child soldiers. The impressive creature effects actually distract a bit from the story here, which is a pity, because when it digs into the deep generational trauma and milks horror from it, it's brilliant.

Not bad but I guess I couldn't really form a bond with the protagonists so I really did not care what happened to them.
