I'm really enjoying Emilio Fernández films. They suit my mood. The opening of Salón México (1949) movie was amazing and it kept a lot of that through-out the film. There was a brief turn to normalcy with a overly conventional turn of event, which took me out of it a little. But that didn't stop me from being drawn into most of the film.

A beautiful, tragic melodrama about a woman encased in the stereotypical trapping of being a mother or a whore. She's both, and the movie puts her in that box, but does so only to show that she wants to, and deserves to, get out. The sets borrow from American melodramas of the time, and translate so well to inner city Mexico, where every structure feels centuries old, but with fresh neon lights glued to the marquis, as if to brush reality under a rug. A movie with great heart.
