A lot of the social realist stuff is not entirely my thing but this was still very moving in parts. I'm thinking mainly of the scene where Krishna has been picked up by the police and his fellow lower caste members talk to him in the car about how one day India will belong to them and the simple statement "how can the state be a mother?"

For all the talk of authenticity in Mira Nair's masterclass, this feels mighty phony.

Surely this movies seem educational for those who don't live around this. For the rest of us -the huge majority- it lacks a point unless there's a catch -artistic or otherwise. Didn't see one here.

Touching movie about street kids in Bombay, but the characters stay a bit too much one-dimensional movie stereotypes to be really good.

The film is under two hours long but feels much much longer. The direction and editing are the weakest parts of this movie. The acting is decent overall with Nana Patkar being the standout. I liked this movie but wasn't blown away by it... [Full review]

Mira Nair's first gritty portrayal of life in urban India. An excellent look at real people living with oppression and poverty.

Good and touching movie. The acting is amazing, especially from the kids. It looks so real and seems as if the camera is filming every day life

Powerful film - haunts you for months if not years after you watch it. Excellent direction and acting that feels like a documentary for the most part. Representative of the lives of millions in the hell city.

Pretty tough as compared with what we usually see from that country -- namely, Satyajit Ray -- though it's no _Los Olvidados_ by a long shot. It's even a short shot from a _Pixote_. Directed by Nair -- her first fiction film -- with an informed eye for place and for way of life. But the amateur status of a lot of the actors is not well concealed, and some of the lost-soul closeups are gruesomely sentimental.

The movie was very good, hampered by a very dated score and occasional sub-par acting (bad drunk acting... one of my big pet peeves). The worst thing I could say is that it's somewhat predictable. But that doesn't get in the way of letting it depress the hell out of you.
