I like Bonello's anti-narrative impressionist and detached style, he wants to grasp the reality of that certain mise-en-scene which takes place at the current and believes that the photographic reality which exists without the help of "logos" is beautiful and joyful as itself. I appreciate that his visual style turns into Laurent's own understanding of life: a search for beautiful but obsolete gadgets which offer consolation from the bitter realities of life.

Ui. BlurayRip USURY.

Film that is designed like the clothes of Saint Laurent to be all surface no depth apart from pills, thrills and bellyaches. Saint Laurent is like a clothes hanger where the director hangs the styles, music, long tracking shots in discos to signify the numbing of an insecure inner life with pills, drugs and so many drags from countless cigarettes. Film is gorgeous to look at with it's geometrical precise compositions. Unfortunately the filmmakers didn't know when to quit, which is in time.

Bonello creates a work-oriented portrait of Saint Laurent, dazzling us with design, color, and a roving camera that highlights the growing beauty in Saint Laurent's world. That Bonello mirrors all of that with Saint Laurent's descent into promiscuity and drugs serves to create a tension that sits at the heart of this most influential designer.

The low scores for this utterly baffle me. I may not know much about Yves Saint Laurent after watching this, but i do know that it's unmistakably a Bertrand Bonello film, and all which that entails. That is to say, it's gorgeous, languid, and somewhat inscrutable. If anything, it certainly feels of a piece with House of Tolerance (where i compared that film to Proust, this goes as far as to open with a scene of Laurent checking into a hotel under the alias 'M. Swann', which about says it all.)

Episodes from the life of designer Yves Saint Laurent (Gaspard Ulliel as a young man; Helmut Berger as an old one), with emphases on his decadent lifestyle, homosexuality, and fragile personality. At 150 minutes it's a long haul, and the scenes of clubbing and drinking and drug use grow tedious, but the scenes which focus on YSL's work are fascinating, Ulliel gives a devilishly charismatic performance, there's a great soundtrack, and the production is extremely handsome, befitting the theme.

Not inherently dramatic, but in its chic artistry it's the only worthwhile movie among the growing group of fashion czar biopics. Bonello saves the boring sex, drugs & haute couture scenes by creating Cinema in the charged DePalma sense. I prefer his intense concentration on colors, lines, faces, and movement to the middlebrow cause-and-effect of rival productions.

Don't watch this movie. Seriously. Don't watch. Are you having second thoughts for watching? Don't. Please. The director obviously watched every movie ever made in the history of cinema and tried to apply everything he saw in his film. Still thinking about watching it? Let me tell you the best performance was given by the drug-overdosed dog Moujik. Don't watch it.

Gaspard Ulliel performed splendidly, however everything else about this movie was dragged, repetitive and boring to infinity.

Tries things, but ultimately the subject is not substantial enough to justify the running time. Maybe the fabric is interesting, but not the material.
