Rustlers' Rhapsody

1985
Comedy, Western
1h 28m
While the audience watches a black and white horse opera, a narrator's voice wonders what such a movie would be like today. Rex O'Herlehan, The Singing Cowboy, finds himself in color and enters a cliche ridden town, in which the evil cattle baron (Andy Griffith) and the new Italian cowboys (who always wear raincoats no matter how hot it gets) join forces to get him and the sheep ranchers to leave the valley. This not really being that funny at all save for a few mild smiles is fucking hilarious after finding out the director was given anything he wanted to followup the success of Police Academy. BUT, it's so pleasant and gentle you don't mind.

Another attempt at a Zucker bros. silly comedy from the era, this time sending up old Westerns. It gets the right tone, and some of the jokes bring a laugh, but if truth be told much of the writing is pretty poor and there's definitely room for way more gags to be squeezed into the script. Its heart is in the right place, unfortunately it just doesn't have the material to pull it off.

Take it for what it is and you will have a good time. Rustlers' Rhapsody has some hilarious lines. It's not the greatest comedy out there but it is much better than the current genre comedies out there. Watch this if your a fan of the Police Academy movies, Naked Gun movies, or if your a major fan of Westerns.
