Russian Dolls

Duris' Xavier crosses into insufferable territory with Russian Dolls. While this sequel is better produced, it lacks some of the authenticity and charm present in L'Auberge Espangnole. Instead Klapisch treats us to a stereotypically French perspective on love with a few idiosyncratic stylistic flairs. the film is still well-acted, and there are a few good moments, but it's overlong and thematically dull. Tautou and Bishop definitely make the film more interesting.

While the English actor has become startling attractive in the years between these two films, the sequel lacks much of the charm of the original. It's understandable as the situation which made the original fun and chaotic has ended and would have made no sense to extend.

Klapisch's irresistible blend of free sex, international travel and polyglottery returns, missing none of the quirky and fun elements that made the first film a hit. The story moves fast and the diverse characters and framing devices keep things interesting. In fact the first 2/3 are pretty much perfect lightweight Euro-flavoured entertainment. The finale drags on a tad but it's not enough to spoil this achievement.
