A charismatic main character and good sword fighting along with satisfying hand to hand fighting. The overarching story was a bit fanciful but set the stage for the moral tones of the movie. Well worth watching, especially if you are a fan of the genre.

The film is melodramatically shit. If you can sit through it, fairly rewarding towards the end. It does a lot to bring the only thing source material does good into life...which is fight careography.

The film was well made and most of the actors did a good, with a few over acting way too much. The action scene while few were surprisingly well done. The story is cherry picked scenes from the manga strung together into a loose plot. The movie is over two hours long but it's still not enough time to get to know the characters, one of the problems is the fact that there are simply too many characters. They should've just concentrated on a couple of them but instead they spent most of the running

Kept much of the spirit of the original source material. Takeru Satou plays Himura Kenshin well.

A fair enough jidai-geki, but one that embraces kooky exaggeration and metaphysical hyperbole to a distracting and perhaps embarrassing degree. A recent subsection of these Japanese blockbusters (...Yamamoto, Eien no zero, Goemon, this, so on) are also creeping ever-so-slightly to a conservative Japanese Nationalism, which is a troubling undercurrent. Here it just doesn't make sense.

My wife knew all about the 90s anime and wanted to see the live-action version of Rurôni Kenshin. We plan on seeing all 5 films. I'm a complete newbie so I got to catch-up on the characters and such, so it's good to get the origin portion started. And this did it good. Strong action too, along with cartoonish enough villains for me to enjoy. I'm gonna look forward to the other films. Maybe one day I'll get into anime and watch the series too.

This is such an almost film. So many things to like, bar a few casting choices. If you know the manga, they did a really great job of combining 2 of the stories into one, though they did miss an opportunity with one major plot line. It also doesn't feel over the top, which makes this very watchable.

This review is more for the entire series of movies rather than just this one. I thoroughly enjoy them. In a sea of questionable live action adaptations of anime/manga this is leaps and bounds above the rest.

Has some slick style, mostly in the rapid choreography in the final act, but its story is empty - not helped by a poorly crafted world - and disappointingly characterless (particularly in Kaoru’s “arc”, which has her in pants with a sword until she meets the titular wanderer, after which she is only seen in a kimono being a damsel in distress).

The drama is bogus, and there are not enough action scenes to keep up the pace.

This is an excellent film. Even though the characters, sets, story and costumes are cartoonish... its very well done. The characters and acting is very charming though some like Kaoru can be hammy at times. Rewatched it several times in one month then the others in the series. The Kenshin actor is very good. Its like watching a good western or a Tarantino movie but better.

It really is hard to transition an anime to live action and keep the spirit and feel of it. But this does a reasonable job, with good action and a faithful story.

Wonderfully cast, appropriately toned, and with impressively exciting action, "Rurouni Kenshin" is near guaranteed to satisfy both fans of the genre and fans of the renowned source material.

The adventures of a former assassin who has sworn never to kill again in the early years of the Meiji period. I admittedly have no previous experience with Rurouni Kenshin other than the Trust & Betrayal OVA, so I have no clue whether this flick does the manga or anime any justice, but it was quality entertainment. It's got a solid story, detailed characters, plus a stunning number of flawlessly executed fantasy swordfights. Ranks up there among the top chanbara of the last 10 years.

Pretty, fun and forgettable, even for fans of the manga this adaptation will register as mostly a proof of concept; or they might squabble about which details the movie changed and missed and that discussion will be the most interesting one about it.
