Run Silent Run Deep

I could watch Burt Lancaster surrounded by sea men all day. oh wait

I knew I liked this movie, but what I realized on repeat viewing is that I LOVE this movie. Just having Gable and Lancaster facing off in a submarine is a recipe for movie magic, but it's also a really meticulously crafted and suspenseful action film. It's the model for a lot of similar films going forward, most notably "Crimson Tide" (although it's worth noting that "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" manages to borrow part of the premise as well).

Classic WW2 sub movie with some cheesy dialog & acting, but surprisingly accurate in terms of submarine lingo and procedures. Great miniature FX, by the way - if it weren't for the water splashes during the explosions giving away the true scale, they'd be even more convincing, but I guess the miniature work was absolutely top notch in 1958.

This is both a very good WWII submarine movie, and a very bad one. Great plot, a lot of accurate portrayals, spoiled by ham-handed use of morse code and some *really* bad "I'm having a bad dream" acting. Still worth seeing, no question. I can highly recommend the book, however.

Perfectly acceptable sub movie, even if Toho does the miniatures better. It was jarring how often the sub was exposed above water. Isn't the whole point of the submarine to operate underwater? I did love the board game scene with Warden and Gable. 15/MAR/2023

Good cast. Pretty good story.

"Run Silent Run Deep" is the story of men bound together by war. The central conflict is the war, but it's the personal conflicts that carry the film. I enjoyed how they used the crew interactions to set the stage for many of the scenes.

A drama/adventure that lacks any real dramatic tension. The film goes for something expressive in the end, but it doesn't really connect, seeming more a puzzling curiosity than anything. I would have preferred a more pointed and fleshed out relationship between the two leads. As it is, none of the characters really distinguish themselves in any way--everyone seems cut from about the same cloth. That said, Wise does give us quite a bit of sharp angled, atmospheric filming inside the sub.

A brilliantly constructed story that is captivating the whole way through. Of particular focus is the relationships between the captain, his XO and the sub's crew. Something about a boat full of men with all their own opinions, motivations, but an obligation to a chain of command is so compelling. I love submarine films, and this is my favorite.

Idiotic tactics by the submarine crew really ruined this for me.

What held this movie back were the ridiculous tactics where a submarine captain would purposfully expose their minimally armored submarine to surface fire and aircraft - Not likely!
