Mediocre movie overall, but gets some points because it has some great stuntwork by Jackie. I like how the movie pretty much throws logic out the window the more the movie progresses, that final part of the movie where Jackie chases that hovercraft was goofy as fuck.

As a tourist from Hong Kong, Ah Kueng goes to New York to attend his uncle's wedding. He plans to take it easy. Being a tourist, seeing some sights and helping out in the family's supermarket. But someone forgot to tell him that this supermarket is in the heart of the South Bronx, or a neighborhood where crime is rampant. Now it is convenient that he is a police officer by profession. He soon makes it clear to the various street gangs, who still have something to fight with each other...

Until the first fight happens, the movie is basically the florist scene from The Room. After that, it is just a weaker Walking Tall, which is a movie I hate already. The stunts and fight scenes are top notch, but this has nothing on the Police Story movies or The Legend of Drunken Master, and the non-fight parts make me groan and reach for a book.

Some of the dialogue is bad and the bad guys are one dimensional characters. However the reason to watch this film is Jackie Chan, he is very charming in this action movie. Chan's stunts are so much fun and are really exciting. Chan does some really original and exciting stunt work. Overall I would recommend this film.

The first time Jackie Chan came to America he brought with him the finest movie he had made: Police Story. Of course we rejected it because he didn't have a mustache; which was the fashion at the time. So the second time around he made a movie he thought Americans would like and we ate it up because we're gullible and because it really is pretty good. But Police Story rules.

Jackie Chan is the Fred Astaire of martial arts and this is his best. He's so much fun that he can do without other niceties like a script, or a plot, or careful editing.

Nobody does what I call "situation-fu" like Jackie. Put him in an environment, and he can beat seven shades of shit out of a bunch of dudes with whatever is hanging about. The plot etc are pretty ropey in this, but let's face it that's not why you're watching. Also love the pre-credits sequence of almost every cast member being hospitalised doing daft practical stunts.

While the story is just an excuse for several action scenes, said action scenes are very enjoyable. The Anita Mui romance fakeout makes as much sense as the rest of this movie, but the hovercraft scene is as good as I remember.

The acting and dubbing are pretty bad and the storytelling contrived (the plot and characters, the few dramatic and romantic moments), but it's such a joy to watch Jackie Chan perform his inventive, creative, exciting, fun stunts (directed by himself and Stanley Tong) and give it his all (during the end credits we even see footage of him breaking his ankle). It's an engaging and funny film with a lot of great fights and stunts and a few memorable sequences on top (the bottles, the hovercraft).

Some fantastic stunt work, but for me it's too infrequent to overcome how messy the script is. The story and characterisation barely make sense and the drama is tedious. While dubbing can be charming, here it is spectacularly bad.

Chan's first American hit is brimming with iconic stunt peices, occasional humor, garishly villanous baddies and complete sidelining of any other character but Jackie Chan. As usual, the climax sequence was amazing. Laughable plot but, action that seemingly only Chan can pull off made this movie good.

A fun outing for Chan is unremarkable by his standards, but still highlighted by the expected beautifully done action set pieces; most notably the breathtaking supermarket warehouse sequence, though Chan's balletic talents are fun to watch the whole way through the film. If the surrounding story elements weren't so borderline tedious and uninvolving (especially in the second half), this would be worthy of a higher score.

Pretty cheesy plot (more than most martial arts movies), but man, no one has ever been better than Jackie Chan at finding creative ways to incorporate the environment into the fight scenes, and he has off the charts charisma as well. Would have liked to rate it higher, but the second half of the movie is a good bit worse than the first, and the abrupt ending was pretty bad. Still, a fun flick that you can watch when you just want something casual on the tube.

I know you don't go into these movies to take in superb acting, but wow that was hokey. From the ridiculous dubbing to the outrageous 90's gangs and mobsters it was a spectacle, and not in a genuinely good way. But for the real reason I watched it, it's hard to be disappointed with Chan's stunts and fight scenes.

Jackie Chan's early days were great. This looks like it's going to start out as a fairly modest, low-budget action movie, but it pulls out some huge stunts and elaborate chase scenes later on. The acting might be corny and over the top, but that's something you should come to know and love if you're a true fan of the martial arts genre.

The fight scenes, the jumps, the chases, they are all very well executed and fun to watch. Chan's acting isn't great, but it's passable, particularly in this role where he's meant to be a fish out of water. So as a purely Jackie Chan experience the movie delivered. But everything else is downright awful. When the token disabled boy is the best actor in your film you've got some serious problems, and the bad acting is only rivaled by the horrible writing.

Living special effect Chan choreographed and performed all of his own stunts, and they are remarkable (pay special attention to the hovercraft scene). Over-the-top cheesy dubbing and streets that are obviously not New York (filmed in Vancouver) add to the cartoonish fun. After several attempts to break into the American market, this is Chan's first release in the United States.
