Part 1, which is exactly 60 minutes long, is seven or eight long shots in which the camera just sits there recording whatever happens to be in its view. First we get a shot of a two-lane road in a tunnel, then we get a shot in a steelworks, then we get one outside an airport... and so on. Part 2, which is also exactly 60 minutes long, is one continuous shot of a smokestack. Sometimes it belches smoke. Sometimes it doesn't. (Summary by Stain)

interesting. i prefer this as a sociological essay on the ruhr region rather than some ontological question regarding the nature of observation. second half was a brutal test of patience.

Look at the summary. I wrote that. I'm not kidding, I swear, that really is the entire film. Perhaps Benning was making some sort of statement of, or about... something. I'm more inclined to suspect that this is a practical joke. While we the audience saw the movie in near-perfect silence, I had to keep myself from laughing a couple of times as I visualized dozens of Arts & Crafts students struggling to read all kinds of deep meanings into this film to impress their teachers and their peers
