Urban ﬁlm set in the French ghetto of Aubervilliers with a very optimistic and sympathetic view towards the slum youth. Intertwining the ﬁctional narrative with real interviews of residents was a nice touch. However, the stylistic choice of black-and-white immediately evoked images of the earlier ﬁlm La Haine. As a result, Rue des cités comes across as extremely derivative, and the (numerous) aspects in which it falls short of its predecessor was needlessly highlighted.
