The poker script is pretty good but the poker direction leaves a little to be desired. The tells are super exaggerated and the card play is extremely dumbed down. Film doesn't seem to trust the audience to pay attention. Damon's poker face makes it hard to believe he would win a nickel. The noir vibes work well and the Johnny Chan cameo is cool

The movie can be summed up by the story Matt Damon tells John Turturro about sitting down with Johnny Chan. It's a nice story, not great, but told well enough that it's worth hearing a second and a third time. But Edward Norton is more contrivance than catalyst for the story.

This movie has everything. An average plot, a great cast, Poker AND John Malkovich, but eventhough the movie seams to have everything, I am still left thinking that this movie could have been great had it dared to take some chances and not just play it safe. Damon is a little weak, but he is saved by Malkovich, who is cold as ice as Teddy KGB and Edward Norton who is almost slithering and snakelike as Worm.

Plotwriting gambling movies 101: 1) protagonist loses money 2) protagonist gets threatened and/or beaten up by loan shark 3) add 60 minutes of useless filler, preferably something personal, like girlfriend or family troubles . 4) Come out swingin' and nail it at the poker table! WIN ALL YOUR MONEY BACK AND EVEN MAKE SOME PROFIT! Humiliate your opponent. 5) The fucking end.

The many poker scenes throughout here are certainly entertaining, with Damon's soft voiceovers filling you in on all the fascinating features of the game, but they aren't enough to make up for a plot that feels more like a poker player's pipe dream than a legitimate drama: It's too easy and cliche and fumbles the potential of its two interesting lead characters (Norton's Worm especially begged for more study). All told, it's a good flick-just needed more focus on the story and less on the poker.

Does the opposite of what a movie like The Card Counter does where it makes gambling seem like the most exciting thing in the world. I’m ngl I watched this and then the next night went out and lost a couple hundred playing black jack. Norton as Worm is one of the best slime balls in film history. Right from his introduction you know he’s just fucking everyone’s life up around him. Turturro With one of the best heat checks (to use Simmons parlance, it is Rounders after all). Women are the rake

Fun and enjoyable dive into the professional poker world aspires to THE HUSTLER in Damon’s noirish narration, and a mercurial, mythical antagonist in a gleefully hammy Malkovich, but the film is far too upbeat for it to be substantive, forcing a happy smile on characters and material which don’t wear it easily. The straightforward narrative is a plus, and a fine supporting cast breathe life into to their roles (especially Landau), capped by Damon and Norton's terrific team-work.

Buddy film, formulaic to the hilt. You quickly learn to take what you can get, self-consciously appreciating the photography, production design, performances, etc. The triumphant ending is unearned and relies partly on a "tell" that's stupid even by movie standards. Malkovich brings us one of film's greatest bad accents.

I played Yu-Gi-Oh! as a teenager and this film was a favorite of many of my friends, likely due to the romanticization of card-playing. But at 22, that's not enough for me -- this is the type of film that should say something about gambling, but doesn't. It's a standard sports flick (albeit with a less athletic game) and the heads-up nature of the climax ends up rendering a lot of characters superfluous, though the girlfriend was already pointless in the first place. The actors make it work.

I wouldn't say that I was "all in" when I watched this film. At one point I was feeling pretty bored. John Malkovich also had a really good and funny cameo as the scary Russian card shark/knee cap artist...

Good film, I suspect even if you're not particularly interested in poker. One issue I have is....you're a single, heterosexual young man. Famke Janssen,in her early 30's, comes to your house wearing a little black dress and a smile. She grabs hold of you and starts to kiss you, she's moaning and pushing her body against yours. Her intentions for the rest of the evening are quite clear.Your next move?Yep,push her away and make it quite clear there'll be none of that funny business.WRONG ANSWER

Even if I could forgive the lack of credit it gives viewers knowledge of poker; Damons' mind-reading, clichéd characters, crappy accents and the wholly predictable -lose-win-setback-win- template would all still drag this down. Thoroughly underwhelming.

Amazing example of how characters can move a story better than plot. Even when the story's pace is incredibly slow, the characters are so entertaining you almost don't realize it. The dialogue is a little heavy with the card-players lingo, but even if you don't understand half of it, Damon and Norton's performances drive home all the energy and charisma of two rounders! On top of what they do with character, the movie's also expertly crafted, and Malkovich is a pure delight!

I'm not a big enough fan of poker to find this really interesting, and I thought it was only a step above being average. I didn't think Damon or Norton were particularly strong (and I like both of them) and I am admittedly not a fan of Malkovich, and this film didn't change that. I thought Landau was good in his small role.

The first 2/3 of the film are as uninteresting as possible. It was a struggle to get to the last third. I'm glad I did because it was great and definitely made the film worth watching. Damon, Norton, and Malkovich all give passable performances. Landau, although only in a minor role gives the standout performance. Wish the directing was a little better but for being about poker it was better than I was expecting.

Rounders is ultimately a fun film, although it never approaches must-watch territory because of its unoriginal story and poor characters. But the poker scenes, which dominate our time spent watching it, are quite enjoyable, especially if you already had an interest in the game. This is a sports comeback story with a poker player instead of professional athlete, although unlike most of these films, the "sport" in question is the most entertaining part.

Even though some of the poker stuff is unbelievable, like when he knows everyone's hands after seeing half the deal, or John Malkovich's tell with the Oreo's, it is still a great movie. This film doesn't have the intrigue of some of Dahl's more noirish films. It's played more as a straight sequence of poker games with a bit of moralising in between. Even the hands themselves are disappointingly straightforward. Ed Norton gives a lively turn, and Malkovich is clearly enjoying his Russian accent, but Matt Damon is bland as they come. The whole thing feels like nobody's best work. It is watchable.

Nothing extraordinary but entertaining none-the-less. Upside is you see Edward Norton in his best. The downside is Matt Damon (who I actually like) starts looking like the easter bunny the moment Norton appears on the screen. Malkovich's excellent russian accent is the cream on the top. Gritty brown New York backdrop and the accompanying smooth jazz also adds to the value.
