Roti made in the early 1940s inspired by the German Expressionism, is a real critique of Indian society with prophetic insight. It deals with two models - one of a millionaire, possessed by money and power in an industrial civilisation, the other of a tribal couple living in a primeval state of nature. The millionaire is saved by the couple after an air crash, the tribal couple emigrate to the city, do not find happiness and return.

Easily the most interesting movie from India I've seen from 1942. While I wouldn't recommend it to anyone not used to Bollywood, this one does use the interesting mix of German Expressionism, exotic Hollywood and naturally India's own style of singing storytelling. Opens great using the brutal capitalistic approach with the expressionistic style dominating the greedy nature of it's characters. Falls from grace during the second portion. Roti is still a movie which sticks out from the bunch.
