Boy was Criticker’s probability score wrong on this one. It was on all of the time in our household when I was younger, so actually watching it straight through was a bit nostalgic and ended up adding to the themes of growing up and getting things figured out. The two leads are irresistibly gorgeous and talented, and quite funny. Garofalo was a huge highlight too. A couple of scenes didn’t quite work for me, but nothing took away from my enjoyment. Touching and hilarious.

Great needle drops, great characters thats all you need and this does it baby. A hoot. Mira Sorvino has the best voice, it's tangling with Holly Hunter

What on the surface looks like it could rival the worst movie ever made actuallly is quite charming and endearing. It has a lot of jokes and is effective in delivering it's simplistic message. Probably rated too high but what can I say, it cracks me up.

Cheerfully vapid, colourful escapism that is endlessly watchable. Quite possibly Janeane Garofalo's finest moment.

Genuinely sweet natured beacon to being oneself is reminiscent of a less ambitious MURIEL'S WEDDING, where the poster and opening scenes lead you to expect a superficial good time, but soon reveals itself to be more thoughtful and contemplative (with some extraordinary interpretive dance to boot!) Sorvino and Kudrow make for a great deadpan comedy team, with both actresses going just shy of over-the-top in their portraits of "bimbos" who reveal themselves with more smarts than you might expect.

The first act is uniquely charming, as the lovably awkward leads exchange deadpan diva one-liners and reminisce about high school (with some great flashback sketches). The middle act falters a little as the weak plot flounders about, but the wacky third act with a nice message (featuring a hilarious extended dream sequence and an outrageous three-person interpretive dance) picks things back up. Spikes of vulgarity (mostly thanks to the excellent Garofalo) help break up the overall fluffiness.

It easily could've been a horrible wreck, but it's carried by this weird goofy charm exuded by both it's leads, and ends up being kinda actually okay.

Good enough to make us laugh at and with the characters, but with an element of genuinely melancholy patched up by glowing cinematography and excellent costume design. Bonus Alan Cumming performance too, plus what film is daring enough to make most of it's second act/plot twists a dream seqeunce?

I've rated this much higher than I probably should, but it's only out of fear. You see, on the surface this is an incredibly slow-burn of vapid dialogue and cheesy jokes leading to some "best friends are the bestest!" morale. But then there's also a strange ritualistic dance with face-cradling and 3-way totem poses. I fear that beneath the surface this may be one of the most brilliant and underrated pieces of cinema, and perhaps philosophical insight, of our time.

Every one is on point in this. How is this not essential in the 90's comedy canon with the likes of Clueless/But I'm a Cheerleader etc etc. Hilarious

A fun film about the power of female friendship. The film does something great, as even though the characters are blonde, they are not the traditional stupid comedy characters where the joke is how stupid they are. Instead, it's just that they have egos that hide their true nature, and this "fault" is turned into something positive by the end of the film (they become happy with who they are, rather than envisioning themselves through the eyes of high school bullies).

I never get tired of this movie. The characters are so original and loveable and it's "be yourself" message somehow works really well and doesnt come across as corny. Perfect comic timing, colourful characters and fun music. Ultimate feel good comedy.

This film doesn't take itself at all seriously and neither should you. Taken on its own terms - as varied and kooky as they might be - it more often than not succeeds. In its most freewheeling moments it ends up not only being a lot of fun but a sweet and warm-hearted throwback to a slightly more innocent time. Probably deserves a little more cult kudos than it has ever received, but for many who found this just when they needed it, Romy & Michele remains pretty damn essential.

A campy and goofy flick with two ditzy losers who try to impress people at their class reunion by spinning a web of lies about how successful they are, leading to a myriad of complications. Full of convenient plot contrivances and silliness, it's also funny enough to be worth a watch. I can't bring myself to hate anything with Janeane Garofalo in it.

I didn't think much of this back in the day when I watched it on VHS. Revisiting it 25 years later, I can see why it's developed some kind of fanbase during the years. It's enjoyable and actually has something to say about these characters and their friendship. They're not just stereotypical blondes and a big part of that are the performances by Sorvino and Kudrow plus the scene stealing Garofalo. Nostalgic soundtrack as well.

Parts of it are fun with a sort of campy charm to it, but I'm not sure if it really all comes together. Honestly they could have ramped all of the set pieces up a couple of notches and it really would have sold everything. Ultimately it gets outshined by more iconic 90's nostalgia flicks.
