Has anyone other than Steve Guttenberg played a cop more times than Gary Oldman?

Sexy, tough, completely original modern noir (that's also very, very funny in a completely offbeat way). Superb writing from Hilary Henkin. Gary Oldman, Juliette Lewis & Annabella Sciorra are absolute perfection. But Lena Olin completely runs away with the picture. As Mona, she's a loose cannon/sex goddess assassin who's used to getting exactly what she wants. It's her way or the highway...& she's absolutely spectacular.

A knowing, wallowing, winking film noir, post-David Lynch, post-Jennifer Lynch even, wherein extremity and excess pass for profundity. The crooked-cop hero (Oldman: not quite so bad as the cop in _Bad Lieutenant_, more like merely a Bad Sergeant) narrates the tale in the third person -- an acceptable gimmick (for alienation, schizophrenia, whatever): "He walked around just like anybody. But inside, he wasn't like anybody."

Not fan of the overly melodramatic takes and acting in many scenes. It sort of dragged on and cold have been much more if they didn't try so hard

I haven't been this annoyed or bored with a movie for quite some time. It starts out promising and I think I'd watch Gary Oldman in anything, but this movie just tries too hard and it's obvious. It's not witty, nor is it exciting, and the way Lena Olin's character bursts into an annoying laughter each time she's killing someone just made me feel a sense of secondhand embarrassment so bad. An overly long, melodramatic attempt which seriously wastes some good actors here.

Overheated noir/melodrama is still compelling largely thanks to a perfect cast of actors who are probably the only performers who would have had a shot at making this thing work; Oldman in 'King Crazy' mode is fine, but Olin ups the ante as Fatima Blush on steroids; Scheider also effective as a sleazy crime lord. Like a fever dream, makes little sense when all is said and done, but still quite a lot of fun in the moment.

Strange movie. Kind of a 'Red Shoe Diary' style to it with Gary Oldman playing David Duchovny.

Gary Oldman is great as always, but it seems that it doesn't benefit from being a noir film, at all. Take away the narration and all that stuff, and it'd probably be a better film, just, mind you.

If there was anything more annoying and stupid than Olin's contrived laughter throughout the film, it was the improbability of her stealing the gun off that doofus cop at the pighouse. There were other details that rankled me but we'll leave it at that.

I really liked parts of this film, and thought Oldman and Olin were great but something is missing as everything feels a little too forced and cool for its own good.

Disappointing, given the talent involved. No, this is not "True Romance" or "Blue Velvet," although I think it would like to be. Lena Olin, though, is sexy and pretty scary too.

"Hardboiled" != "overcooked". Gary Oldman does a great New Jersey accent, though
