The utter patheticalness of the main character can be grating, and every person seems to be sexually repressed and suffering from some kind of psychological pathology (except, weirdly, Siffredi's character). So if you're into that. I would say it's less a good film than an interesting one.

Provocative is definitely the word for it, as the misanthropic worldview, unpleasant characters, and weighty ennui will get to you if the raw content doesn't. In a lot of senses, it's a miserable picture. At the same time, I think Breillat touches on some feminine elements that very rarely appear in film, and some scenes are unforgettable.

French and disgusting.

More didactic than maieutic, the film begins with great promise until about half way through where the audience realizes they are just as sterile as Marie. Oversteps its reserve into the realm of self-indulgent filmmaking where Breillat has mistaken cold, gesticulating bodies to be fungible with actual film technique.

Romance estreava há 25 anos na França. Não chega a ser obra-prima como Anatomia do inferno, mas também é um inferno de jornada dentro do patriarcado. Ninguém é mais sincera ao filmar a condição da mulher que a Breillat. YTS.

Breillat's film possesses a pleasing tone that is accentuated by good music over some parts, but doesn't deliver in the narrative or characterisation. This may not be everything, but I feel that Breillat made a film here that tried to emphasise these two things. Her musings on sexuality sometimes become absurdly generalising.

A very... "educational" film. Not much in the way of characters or a story arc, but the leading lady's performance is brave and (ahem) unrestrained (whoops), and the voiceover narration feels intimate and frank even if it goes to some disturbing places I didn't need to know about. The film feels something akin to an avant-garde art project, but you have to salute the director's vision and commitment to portraying the unglamourous realism of sex and the unfulfilling role it plays in some lives.

Too artistic, but the whole ambiance was good. No matter what Breillat vented her rage utterly by using a depressive way (although for me some rebellion was not necessary, I could still be taken into the movie.)

Dull and unappealing; it's certainly possibly to create an explicit film that deals maturely with sex and sexual politics, but this film is hardly mature or intelligent (is displaying a wall of female bottom halves to show women as fuckholes sophisticated or interesting? I don't think so.)

Wanky pretentious art crap. Dislikable characters. So forgettable & dull i actually watched half of it again before i realized i'd seen it & hated it allready. Lots of talking that makes little or no sense highlights the passionless sex scenes. Occasionally the heroine would start to say something which seem to capture a thought or feeling, and then would go back to near tears sex acts or voyage into incomprehensible poetry. A real yawn.
