Worthy follow-up to the original (though it inevitably lacks that entry's raw street-level grit). Stallone wisely keeps the focus squarely on the characters, developing them in all the right ways. Plus, the final fight is awesome.

The scene with every kid in Philly runs with Rocky then surround and absorb him on the ROCKY STEPS is ALMOST as dumb as Adrian falling into a coma to make Rocky montage train to music because he tried training earlier without music and it didn't work. Rocky II is 90 minutes of fluff then A GOOD ROCKY FIGHT MMPH. Not a fan of thin Burt Young.

Not as good as Rocky, but far better than the rest that followed. I really liked this movie, following the life of Rocky post-fight. Showing Rocky as family man and failing was not something that Hollywood would do now. Rocky squanders his money and ends up having to go back to the only thing he's good at and agrees to a rematch with Creed. Other than the bit with Adrian in a coma, this movie is believable and gripping. The ending, while expected, still delivered.

Right up there with the original, with easily the best fight of the series AND best training montage. Also, it's relentlessly downbeat for the first 2/3 of the movie, which is an impressively bold choice for such a mainstream flick. Fantastic music throughout, too. Bill Conti, take another bow.

Having seen this many times, I noticed the plotholes more (Rocky wouldn't have been limited to commercials - what about photo ads & Wheaties boxes?; why does Adrian suddenly want him to fight?), but it also made me realize that Stallone deserves alot more credit than he gets because everything else is so entertaining & moving & done w/ such iconic characters, that you don't mind. Stallone's as emotionally manipulative as Spielberg & that's a compliment. It's a fairy tale that often feels real.

Rocky II is a solid sequel that follows directly on from where the original film left off. Whilst many deem the Rocky sequels unnecessary, I love them all for different reasons and the whole series is very important and sentimental to me. This second instalment sees Rocky and Apollo go head to head once again with another amazing finale. The characters are developed further and the performances are strong. The music is brilliant once again and the training montage is as nostalgic as ever.

You are kind of waiting for all the drama to get out the way, the training to start and the music to start up. Also, am I missing the training that allows Rocky to be pummelled to death twice over but not die?

With some continued great acting and a hell of a fight at the end, Rocky II retains a lot of the good, but adds some not so hot aspects. Most of the first half feels like Rocky 2: Rocky Goes Hollywood, and most of the writing just isn't good. That being said, there's some great direction and acting. I just wish it made for a better overall movie.

I like that Rocky was able to put his training on hold to attend to his sick wife, yet he still had enough time to get back into the swing of things and fight/defeat the heavyweight champion of the world. All you need is heart, moxie, and a Hollywood montage.

At times silly, but overall enjoyable sequel aided immeasurably by Stallone's likable lead performance. Meanders too much in the 1st half (when the outcome is already blatantly obvious), film really hits its stride in the second half with a series of rousing scenes of triumph, and a typically bemused performance from Meredith; Stallone's direction also surprisingly accomplished.

It can't live up to the original, but it's still a highly enjoyable sequel that doesn't stray too far away from what made the original great. There are some goofy moments (when all the kids run with him, and when Rocky and Apollo are just nailing each other with unblocked haymakers), but the fact that the fight is overall better and how they kept the character of Rocky true to the original made this worth it to fans of the first.

The first 40 minutes are actually rather dull, however the rest of the movie proves not only pleasant but also pretty engaging and at times surprisingly human, while featuring a solid, satisfying performance by Stallone. Nevertheless it remains simple, sentimentally manipulative and conventional, it employs cliches to build tension and ultimately it fails to grow truly big.

It's essentially a beat-for-beat but not as good remake of the original film, with a first hour-plus that is often downright draining as we watch Rocky lose everything. But it definitely picks up the pace at the end, steering upward into an awesome final fight and ending that damn near makes me cheer out loud. In many ways, it's the last Rocky movie to take its title character's arc and the sport it depicts seriously until 2006, albeit not the last one that's fun.

Rocky II is often confused with the first Rocky. It is this one in which Rocky actually beats Apollo. This movie is very close to on par with the original, which is a good thing. The story is still focused on characters that viewers already know which makes character development the focus, and it works. This movie is one of the greatest sports movie sequels out there. The first half of the fight scene is by far the lowlight of the movie--directed as a comically unconvincing, first-month amateur type performance--but business picks up to where it's one of the most exciting fights on the big screen. Duality of man or whatchamacallit. Rocky's bumbling comedy half hour in the beginning is hit and miss, but I went away with a sense of still somehow caring about a couple of the characters, so it must've done something more right than most films nevertheless.

Top badass moment? God sorting it all out. After a first hour that's less interesting than visiting the annual International Festival of Magnolia Paint, we finally get to the “Win” scene and what we’ve all been waiting for, the training montage. After that, everything's the same as the first film; the disgusting, grey tracksuit is back, along with space rocket man, Rocky’s unfunny jokes and way too much focus on meat. Strangely, it all kind of works. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

Rocky II is the movie I used to recall when I thought I was thinking of Rocky and here you can see the formula of the future franchise being established .... initial setback and doubts, a reason to fight emerges, training montage and then a back and forth fight until ultimate victory. You know, I'm not a boxing connoisseur or anything (I've seen one fight in my entire life), and I'm not one of those OCD-about-realism types, but that fight was one of the silliest things I've ever seen in a movie. A crowd pleasing sequel that muddies the message of the original and by doing so paved the way for a whole slew of sequels that would strain credibility. Sly's direction is competent, if unspectacular, and the characters are still likeable, even if their interactions don't feel as fresh the second time. The final fight between Apollo and Rocky is well choreographed and packs a genuine wallop, but its emphasis on spectacle set the stage for the silliness that would later define the series.

Rocky II is bigger and in some ways better than the original. It just seems to be missing something because of where the character begin and where they end. Not much really changes for them. It's just ridiculous that a movie that's quite literally a repeat of the first one works this well, but that's a testament to just how astonishing and assured Rocky is as a character, his modesty and simplicity making him sympathetic yet believable at every turn. Also the final fight is remarkably suspenseful considering we know what has to happen. Clearly some formulas are repeated because they work.

I loved how the start of this movie was the very last couple minutes of the first film, getting fans caught up if you forgot what happened at the end of the first Rocky. A Rocky sequel is something thoroughly unnecessary. The movie wrapped itself up perfectly, and Rocky's boxing career was never what was important. But lovers of the original Rocky such as myself would hardly shy away from a look at what the beloved cast of characters were up to now. We're given more insight into Rocky settling into his normal life, and even something of history revisionism with Rocky and Apollo's rematch. Some say it spits on the original's ending, but it can stand alone fine.

This was an interesting story, seeing Rocky go from being beaten and retired to going back and taking the fight to Creed. There was some goofy drama, but that was balanced out by not having much of Paulie being an ass. The training montage in this one might be a bit better than in Rocky I. The chicken catching thing has been made fun of so many times that it was interesting to see it here. The end fight with Apollo was appropriately intense. Overall, this was a solid sequel.

Creed and Mickey take the limelight in this sequel that retains much of what made the original such a success. Indeed, the first half lives up to Rocky and feels like a genuinely episodic development of the story. Adrian’s coma brings the pace down a bit, but it’s the final fight (which I loved as a kid) that stands out now, and not in a good way. Balboa’s complete and utter disregard for defence means he’s never been more Homer Simpson than he is here.

Like in the first film, I just can't stand the ridiculously lengthy build-up. I mean, we've got almost 90 minutes of nothing leading up to about 20 minutes of fighting here. This is just the first film all over again, and while it's entertaining it's hard not to fault it for that. I get that it has a focus on character building, but what I don't get is how Rocky is an interesting enough character to warrant so much of it. Once it does get to the fighting, it's fantastic, but there's not enough.
