I hope you don’t mind I hope you don’t mind that I put down in to words, there’s a part in this movie where Elton pushes in turds. *rips this review away from Crass Al Yankovic* Today’s Elton is a husk and I can’t wait to have him scream his songs at me one last time.

Although honestly I'm not exactly a huge fan of musicals or biopics, I still kind of enjoyed the magical realism of the stylized musical numbers, as well as the main performances here. However, most of the "drama" still felt like it was just checking off all the "Behind the Music" cliche boxes along the way. Although with that said, as someone who genuinely prefers the farting astronaut hijinks of "Rocketman"(1997), I might look elsewhere for second opinions on this one.

I really enjoyed this one. Whereas Bohemian Rhapsody came across less as a labor of love, and more as surefire Oscars hit, Rocketman takes the more experimental route. This film is the personality and persona of Elton packed into a film format. It's flashy, sassy and not afraid to let you into some more personal and troubling moments than you may have been prepared for going in. A fantastic one, through and through, and I think a model for musical biopics going forward.

Rock stars are suited for biopics: rags to riches lives, hubris, a fall & comeback. The problem's they've become cliches & that's the case here. It also doesn't help that the lyrics (maybe bc they were written by Taupin) usually only kind of voice Elton's feelings. Is "Tiny Dancer" really what he should be singing when Taupin leaves to hook up with someone? The Mercury biopic stood out by showing how being gay made him lonely. But for Elton it's mostly another cliche: bad parents

For Elton tragics (including myself!), the soundtrack alone makes the film worthy, but like the concurrent BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY, it proves that a jukebox musical might not be the best format to tell its subject's life story as a dramatic rendering, as both elements exist uneasily with each other; reducing Dwight's considerably complex psyche to simplistic "daddy issues" is a disappointing reductionist view. Egerton is terrific however, delivering a convincing and sympathetic portrait of the man.

Everything that Bohemian Rhapsody was missing. I wonder how much of my positive attitude towards this is a reaction to the former? Sleek direction and a palpable sense of Elton’s POV achieves a more personal feeling than your average biopic. Some of it doesn’t quite payoff, but I have to commend the creativity in how the story is told.

It would undoubtedly be possible to make a good film about Elton John, but the filmmakers apparently preferred to forgo the effort required to do so. Characterisation is cartoonish at best, and the audience are treated as dunces throughout. Although I've admittedly only seen two films written by Lee Hall, all signs point to the likelihood that he is a complete hack. Odd watching this directly after PAIN AND GLORY (both were shown at Cannes in 2019): superficial similarities and deep contrasts.

If this movie were just the cool musical transitions and dance scenes, I'd give this a much higher score. However, the plot itself was incoherent and unfocused while having a hard time producing any semblance of emotion. Despite how stylized and experimental this film is, it still ultimately follows the same story beats any other rockstar biopic does. There are moments that could have some dramatic resonance, but the usage of these scenes was insubstantial. mostly boring tbh.

Flashy direction and great performances put this above a lot of biopics and its use of stylised vignettes for the musical elements makes it pop. It falls into a few of the tropes of the genre but it's worth seeing. I like about half of the songs in it and they're done justice except for Benny and the Jets which is a little too modernised for me. The villain is a serious boo hiss figure, wonder if he was that awful in real life?

A fun biopic Musical/Fantasy movie that features many of Elton's songs that are played relevant to the movie scenes and filled with stylish visuals and sounds. Played brilliantly by Taron Egerton, the movie delivers an emotional ride through the ups and downs of Elton's life. It thankfully does not sanitize Elton's issues and you see him get into drugs, alcohol, and homosexuality stuff. The movie is very nicely shot and acted too. There is clearly alot of effort put into this film and the music.

As a consummate spectacle simply bravo to Rocketman. No amount of superlatives can express the undeniable beauty portrayed in its two-hour run time, the artistic expression in both visuals and the perfectly timed score make Rocketman ludicrously emotional. Of course on top of all that- this is Elton John we're talking about,  the score cannot fail to be incredible. The fantasy elements were a element of confusion, but any excuse to embellish the visuals further can never be a terrible inclusion

If you don't like musicals, Bohemian Rhapsody will probably be better for you. It does feel a lot like other biopics before it, but Taron Egerton is fantastic as Elton John which really carried it for me. It's really impressive that Egerton did all of the singing, though I probably gave it a bit of better score because I like the music so much.

Pretty much everything exactly as I expected it to be, with a few additional disappointments and annoyances. There's simply not much substance here, just the typical rock star cliche biopic bullshit, which all feels very amateurish. It's not terrible, the fantasy adds some depth, but overall it's just kinda blah. The poor cast doesn't help. This is no fault of John. His autobiography is quite the page turner, full of interesting anecdotes. He has material, it's just not captured very well here.

It has its qualities in energetic, often imaginatively-filmed musical sequences and Taron Egerton’s excellent performance. But man, these musical biopics are always so, so, so paint by numbers. Always with childhood, daddy issues, initial discovery, being backup/opening act to someone, rise to fame, more daddy issues, spiral into drugs/alcohol, fight with bandmates, personal realization, recovery/reunion with bandmates, happy ending. Every. Single. Time. There’s gotta be a fresh approach.

It's Bohemian Rhapsody all over again, but they've taken care of the gayness. I swear they've re-used some of the scenery. Just like in the Queen movie we get no idea what drove the artist, we just get a National Geographic-y summary of their public life, including all their cardboard "enemies". There's a George Michael-movie already in the works by the same production agency, looking just like this, mark my words.

musical numbers made me ecstatic, and I'm not even an Elton fan. They were bold, and full of magical transitions, moving the story through time, space, and emotion to the fullest extent of film. Equally courageous is Egerton's performance, a high intensity unleashing of all his skill. With all this, Elton is made to be truly legendary, much, much larger than life. Unfortunately, he remains larger than life, and the film's traditional sex, drugs, rock'n'rehab story does little to humanize him

The movie popped with more style and pizzazz and a bit less on narration. I loved the musical numbers and reinterpretations of Elton's discography, but I think you have to love the music to like it - like if you'd go to a Vegas or Broadway revue of the music. Wonderful costume design and Taron Egerton absolutely rocked this.

I liked Egerton's performance. The experimental music scenes--somewhat reminiscent of the approach that I first saw in A Hard Day's Night--that seemed to be their own individual music videos were fun and inspired. But the rest of the story was your standard rock biopic and never truly engaged. Not bad by any means, but underwhelming compared to my expectations.

I don’t like musicals and slightly prefer Queen’s music, but this is easily better than last year’s Bohemian Rhapsody, which was still fairly good. The acting is great, music is done tastefully, and Dexter Fletcher does an excellent job of using the music segments as a way to tell the story and transition from scene to scene. The ending feels slightly abrupt and I would’ve liked to see more of the future, but it’s not a bad ending. Even if you aren’t a fan, it’s a worthwhile film.

Now I'm really starting do dig musical films and biographies. Bohemian Rhapsody felt plastic, this one feels wooden and a tad bit more pristine, even honest on times (can't help myself to not compare them). I like the magical realism touch and it seems to be in-sync with Elton's inner self. There are cheesy moments and some characters could be better fitted into the narrative, but hey, then we would get a spectacular film. Great to watch in the cinema. There are very few personalities, even in an industry as eclectic (and often flamboyant) as the music industry, where this jukebox musical fantasy-style biopic would work. Elton John is one of them. It feels very honest, which sounds weird given the descriptors I used above. As with all biopics, I'm sure it omits (due in no small part to the time period it features), but that's a genre downfall that I won't hold against this movie specifically. A fun, colourful jaunt through Elton's early years and breakthrough into stardom. You expect dramatisations in these things but Rocketman fully goes for entertainment over education, a movie more for its musical set pieces and visual delights than a dedicated biopic. Which is fine, but makes for a slightly hollow film where you never really learn anything about the man himself. Being in the shadows of Bohemian Rhapsody didn't do this film any justice. The story feels similar (yet different), though this one does take a different tack by making it more of a musical and making use of flashbacks to enhance the story. Taron Egerton is amazing in this role and is worth watching on his own. I also wasn't as familiar with Elton John's music, which may have soared my enjoyment a little. At the end of the day, it's not as crowd-pleasing but it is still a decent watch.

So you're watching this. And it's fine. A bit formulaic, but at least the costumes get more and more outrageous, so there's something to look at. You end up feeling inclined to like this movie. Then you watch the deleted scenes and discover that they cut a minor but viable subplot about the emerging AIDS crisis, which actually showed Elton getting his head out of his ass and caring about something other than himself and suddenly you're feeling less generous and end up cutting 8 points.

The first scenes of Rocketman filled me with enormous joy, and in truth, that feeling never left me for the duration. The use of EJ's back catalog (despite at first confusing me by being out of time sequence) was masterfully done. My low score is not a reflection of my enjoyment of the music and overall story, but how all other characters were so poorly fleshed out. No other characters, including Bernie Taupin were anything other than ciphers, which gave the film a very "throw away" feeling.

It's hard not to compare this with last year's Bohemian Rhapsody - especially as Fletcher stepped in to finish that film as well. If BR was cutting corners and providing a cleaned up version of the story, Rocketman presents Elton in rather unpleasant light with all his addictions and insecurities which I thought is quite admirable, especially with his approval. It also gives room for e.g. his long time lyricist and makes it clear that Elton wouldn't be where he is without their co-operation.

There is a bit featured but not much. Not only did it have a better framing device (John overcoming his addiction), but Egerton managed to capture John's spirit, while BR settled for its subjects mannerisms.

I was a little thrown at first since I did not expect this to be an actual movie musical. I thought it was a biographical drama with some of Elton John's music. While it still is a biographical drama (with very heavy subject matter), it is also a musical fantasy. It does manage to merge the two well. Taron Egerton was outstanding!

I quite enjoyed this. I didn't know it was going to be a jukebox musical as well as a biopic going in, so it took me by surprise at first, but I really dug that style. The musical numbers were great, of course - Elton John has so many good songs. Taron Egerton was fantastic. He embodied John really well, and sang very well too. It was fun as a fantastical musical and interesting to learn about John's life. I had a good time with it.

Far superior to BOHEMIAN in just about every aspect. This film feels like a whole concept realized, and at its core is an emotional climax in favor of a grandiose eighteen-minute rock concert recreation. And if Rami Malek can win an Oscar for not singing, then Taron Egerton sure as shit better be at least nominated for one of the best performances this year. Though this falls into many obvious tropes, it's still flamboyantly, whimsically fun.
