I think Dog should have asked someone to help him rescue his friend on the beach, and the middle section felt long to me, but the sweet story, one which is incorporated with many really great details, turns these gripes into quibbles.

During this screening, I got to watch a parent explain to their child what it means to give someone the middle finger. Movie theaters are magical places. Anyway, this was lovely and the ending wrecked me.

Robot Dreams is a beautifully animated film set in vibrant 1980s New York, enhancing the emotional depth of its heartfelt story. The film effortlessly explores complex emotions, focusing on the self-discovery and friendship of a robot and his human companion. With moments of both heartwarming joy and sorrow, it offers a contemplative look at relationships. A must-see for its emotional depth, stunning visuals, and nostalgic setting, though it’s a stretch to imagine NYC ever being that pristine.

Most people seem to like this one, but I really wish they hadn't gone the dialog-free route. Didn't grab me at all.

The animation is quite faithful to downtown New York in the 80s and that is its primary appeal to me. The story with endless longing for a robot is extremely drawn out and basically goes nowhere. It could have so much better with a different script and the same art direction.

Oh yeah, this works for me in a bunch of ways. Dog is a loner who doesn't really relate to people, and Robot's indelible happiness can't help but make you smile - even as his dreams and circumstances develop this increasing dread for the audience. Exploring themes of love, companionship, dealing with trauma and loss, personal growth, and the ability to find enduring meaning and happiness (even if it doesn't look like you thought it would), there's a lot to digest here for the entire audience.

It's fine. The animation is pleasant but nothing exciting, the story is cute but bland, and the music...well, personally I hate insert songs, so I dislike it quite a bit and would greatly prefer original compositions. I suppose if you are really nostalgic for NYC/NJ in the 80s, then this movie might offer more to you than it did for me. For me, it kept my attention enough to not turn it off but not enough to actually make me interested in the characters.

Beautiful, touching, upsettting, made me cry. I wish it had been shorter because I was worried and tearful almost the entire film, so a bit hard to take, otherwise I'd have ranked it higher.

Proof that the ending of "Past Lives" is so strong that it could be made animated, without dialogue, about a dog and robot and still work.

Sympathetic to the max with good looking animation and just the right use of the gimmick.

Wholesome and cute and tucks on the heartstrings a lot, if perhaps a little too hard. I do recommend for children and family watching. It's interesting that the 1980s were chosen as the backdrop since only a fraction of this movie's audience was there to experience them, but I suppose it's what justifies the now-mandatory retro-aesthetic of the robot.

Kid's film - enjoyable, with a strong message delivered through slightly strange scenario. Includes quite prominent images of the World Trade Center for no reason whatsoever.

Touching and heartrending tale of love and friendship paints its setup in broad, superficial terms (for the first act, it is unclear where the story is headed, or indeed how it is going to sustain itself), before it becomes a far deeper study of the fragility of even apparently strong emotional bonds. Communicated in dialogue-free visual language, and embracing the eccentric and quirky spirit of the Wallace & Gromit adventures. Not sure what the recurring WTC imagery is supposed to represent!

Such a sweet story of companionship and 'what could have been', as unforeseen things happen in their life to prevent them from seeing each other. So gentle and wholesome. The hugs got me the most.

Really sweet, yet touching story of a dog and his robot friend starting off as best buddies then certain circumstances makes them take their own journeys and lessons. Intentionally mundane and meandering in many places just like life itself. Sometimes the outcome you want doesn’t play out and like reality you accept the path you’re now on. There is no dialogue at all. The movie does an excellent job at showing exactly what is going on and how the characters are feeling. Nice art style too.

I don't know why Dog doesn't just get someone to help Robot, but even still, wonderful film. Great animation. Tells its story with no dialogue and doesn't feel like a gimmick. Explores loneliness effectively. Uses "September" by Earth, Wind and Fire really well, I will now associate that song with this movie. Funny at times. Robot is a compelling character who smiles constantly, embracing connection through watching/experiencing others. Honest, sad and uplifting all at the same time.

The consistent tugs at the heartstrings are almost too much to bear. Still a great story about loneliness and love.
