An Americanization of Lone Wolf and Cub, this superbly acted story of fathers and sons seems to get better and better every time I see it. The score is magnificent, and the cinematography stunning. Law is unrecognizable as a slimy hitman, Newman is simply brilliant and Hanks proves surprisingly good in a role that is very much outside his 'comfort zone'. Mendes set a high standard by winning a Best Director trophy with his first film, and this sophomore effort does not disappoint.

The cinematography may rival that of The Godfather, but everything else is a letdown. Tom Hanks is woefully miscast as an Irish-American hitman, failing to lend any weight whatsoever to the dual role of doting father and cold-blooded killer. However, it's doubtful that any actor could have rescued this from Sam Mende's typical brand of pretensious mediocrity.

An excllent period crime drama, with emphasis placed upon the more artisitically enclined elements of the gritty 30's underworld to gain maximum impact. Although sometimes slow paced, this road remains involving throughout and the lead part is played predictably well by Hanks. Newman makes a prominent and very much welcome appearance as well, blending effortlessly into the surrounding chaos. Law is also worth a mention for his psychotic hitman. Although cliched, it's very enjoyable throughout.

Road To Perdition is another well crafted piece of filmmaking from Sam Mendes and is a great period crime drama. Considering the somber tone of the film, its all beautifully put together. Tom Hanks carries the film as reliably as ever and although I'm not Jude Law's biggest fan he also gives a brilliant performance here. And the great Paul Newman is a more than worthy addition. The cinematography is some of the finest Ive seen and the score is as equally brilliant. This is a stunning experience.

Well-made, but not entirely successful gangster yarn, tinged with Greek tragedy. Highlighted by Newman's on-screen swan-song as quietly sadistic mob boss, a creepy performance by Law and masterful cinematography. Mendes evokes his masterpiece AMERICAN BEAUTY stylistically, but these touches feel pretentious here, not helped by (T) Newman's overbearing BEAUTY-ish score. Hanks is excellent and unusually intense in the lead; film is overall cold and distancing, hurting ultimate emotional payoff.

Masterpiece of the highest order. Sam Mendes shows everyone how it's done with the perfect cast, the perfect story, some of the best cinematography ever committed to celluloid and an absolutely mind-bendingly excellent score by Thomas Newman. This piece - capturing perfectly the feeling of 1930s Depression America - is simply, in my opinion, the greatest film ever made, and why? Because it is the most complete work I have ever seen; a frame of difference would be offensive. A must watch.

Unlike other crime/gangsterfilms, I never asked myself if this could be possible. It seemed so real that I believed every second of it. (something I only rarely have with this kind of films). The story is attractive, yet tragical. All well acted and I like Tom Hanks here, where he plays a role which is not typical for him.

It attempts to be an epic, but instead is merely pretty good. It's mind-boggling why they didn't include scenes with Al Capone (they were deleted), or why they stopped trying to develop the characters. The movie is saved by some of its final scenes (and brought down a bit by the prologue), and Jude Law does some very fine work here. See it for yourself.

Aesthetically stunning and narratively satisfying, Road to Perdition is an unusual gangster film. It's serene and meditative in a way that makes it almost unique in the genre. At times the sentimentality is a bit on the nose, but Hanks and Paul Newman (in his final film role and a worthy send-off) play off-type as gangsters, both delivering performances with a strong heart. Actors this likable playing unlikable characters was critical for this story. Great film; wonderfully realized and gorgeous

This is basically Miller's Crossing and Miller's Crossing is basically this. Not necessarily a knock, but not praise either. I like and dislike more or less the same things about both films, maybe this gets the edge because of the Hanks/Craig/Newman/Law cast. But a well-shot, acted, and directed film that never particularly blew me away.

Great comic book style story set in a world that film has covered before - 1930s gangsters - done in a way that focuses on a personal story of fatherhood, faith and revenge. A lot of work is done here without dialogue - leading to some very comic-book style frames which can tell a story all by themselves. Excellent performances, especially from Hanks, who should do less traditionally "good guy" roles more often. The score is a bit overbearing at times, but doesn't distract too much from the tone

From the start Tom Hanks and Daniel Craig were miscast. The score, while great, is often out of place. The screenplay was utterly atrocious. It tried to be both a serious gangster movie and a touching father son story and fails at both. The directing was uneven as some scenes were dragged out while others felt rushed. the narration from the kid at the beginning and end of the film was hokey. I did like the cinematography. Especially when they were riding in the car as the main theme played.
