Terrible attempt at franchisesploitation lacking the style, tension and intelligence of it's forerunner. Ripley has changed personality, like Michael Corleone between Godfather parts two and three, from a young shattered personality that killed out of sheer desperation, into John Malkovich who seems to do it for kicks. If one were a lot more cruel and unreasonable than I am, one could say that this is 'The Talented Mr. Ripley' as directed by Joel Schumacher - but that'd be harsh even for this.

Some redeeming moments in an otherwise horrible, laughable film. I hadn't heard Gorecki used in film before, so some points there. - Now I really want to see Wit.

in a way every malkovich film is BEING JOHN MALKOVICH. something of a ripley analog himself, with a voice and persona that seem the product of reptilian calculation, the lines between director, actor and character seem to blur around him, and that's particularly true when he's playing a sociopath who acts solely on his whims, appetites and perceived affronts to good taste. always found this one a touch underrated; it snakes between baroque eroticism and mucky brutality with surprising ease.

It has a strange, timeless feel to it. All of the locations seemed suspended in a kind of nether-space, haunted by the ever-gaunt Malkovich.

A strange film about friendship.

I have no idea why it didn't get a US theatrical release --it's better than most of the film that do. Anyways, Malkovich is perfect as the older Ripley, whose had time to lose all of his feelings and become an inhuman master of deception, accumulating a vast wealth, but still ridiculed for lacking taste.

a film well-fitting to ripley: there's something pulling you in that you can't quite figure out other than realizing the almost perfect rhythm, more than a couple of shots that stick out, competent but in the end rather shallow thriller, which is why it's actually great.

Excellent acting. Worth to view just because Malkovich is in his best form. Movie is done so well, that is hard to understand, who is the bad one and who is good.

"Ripley's Game" is a fine, faithful adaptation of Highsmith's novel and it's particularly successful in depicting an interesting, entertaining tale without merely hinting at the book's moral complexities. Malkovich was practically born to play Ripley -he's sly, seductive and malicious. There's also some strong supporting work from Scott, Winstone and Headey (Caselli is dreadful though). Overall, it's a fully satisfying and engrossing and often deliciously nasty psychological thriller.

Malkovich is pitch perfect. The directing is excellent and the story is well-adapted, with many memorable scenes.

After seeing this, I can't imagine anyone other than Malkovich playing Ripley - he's perfect as the cultured sociopath. The rest of the film is pretty competent but felt curiously old-fashioned.

I don't remember much about this film which suggests it is mostly forgettable (although I did see it at the cinema). But I do recall Malkovich as suitably menacing.

See DavidBlast's review. Completely forgettable unless you're into Malkovich being a ham.
