Best taken as a stylish exploitation film ala DePalma rather than as a straight forward thriller, which it most certainly isn't. It's blacky comic and absurd and makes no qualms about it. Mulcahy pushes the energy levels into the red in the jailbreak sequence and the thrilling climax atop an electrical tower, and he uses dissolve in creative ways to intensify the conflict between Washington and Lithgow. Lithgow gives one of his best gonzo performances, and he chews scenery with reckless abandon.

Absurdly silly thriller is so well-crafted by Mulcahy, combined with Lithgow's phenomenal, full Cage-like work as the villian deluxe, that it completely transcends its trashy roots and becomes sort of brilliant. Washington scores strongly by underplaying for most of the film, before letting go in the final act and joining Lithgow in the nut house, leading to a cock-eyed and insane action climax. Never credible, but it's nice to have a movie that commits to its own absurdity and never looks back.

If it wasn't for Denzel and Lithgow, this movie would be utter garbage, but they are cast so well that the movie becomes hypnotic.

Lithgow and Denzel delight on a shlocky script that if it was any more coherent, wouldn't work. It's a trashy, bloody, pulpy mess with violence that's equal parts hideous and hilarious. Intended as a compliment.

It's a cool thriller that asks for a lot of suspension of disbelief. Love Lithgow on the crazy train, Denzel is good too though a bit reliant on natural charm. I like it more for what it tries to be than what it is, since it goes over the top and strains credulity but outside of a couple of scenes the payoff isn't worth it.

The actors try their best in this film but they can not rise above the bad script. If only the movie had a better script. A showdown between Denzel Washington and John Lithgow should have been amazing but it falls flat.

So many cringe-worthy 90's moments. This is bloody awful. Even Denzel can't save this stinker.

Man, this is fuckin' hard to rate, because if you look at it as a thriller, it is an uneven piece of crap. However, if you rate it as a exploitation dark comedy, it ROCKS! One thing is sure, Washington's performance is top notch, and Lithgow proves once more, that he is the master villain.

It's hilarious and nice to have reminders that Denzel Washington didn't always do quality work. Lithgow is really creepy in most scenes, but the screenplay is so bad that you can't even take him seriously. The positives are Lithgow (doing what he can with what he's got to work with), Ice T, the over the top violence, and Kevin Pollak. Other than that, it's a generic, terrible fucking thriller movie.

Slick, well-cast, occasionally ugly urban thriller grows more tiresome and predictable as it goes along.

Whenever they do a "Top 100 Movie Villains" show, I am always appalled they overlook John Lithgow playing Earl Talbot Blake. When I was a young man, I sometimes waned to be him when I grew up.

This movie is generic, but I cannot say it's completely forgettable because Lithgow is good as the villain and the ending confrontation scene is pretty cool.

When I watched it the first time (I was about 13) it was above 90, but now... it's just good. I like John LIthgow as bad guy just as a good guy.

John Lithgow plays his typical psychopath and Denzel Washington plays his typical principled protagonist in this typical thriller. Generic in most senses. There's dozens of films just like it.
