Rewind

I actually agree with edw that as a documentary it's not exceptionally made. Some things feel forced, the pacing is a little off, there isn't enough interesting home video footage. With that said, the story itself is interesting enough and important enough to warrant it being considered great. I mean, it's hard not to be invested in this because of how horrific it all is, and ultimately that's what it comes down to; being engaged.

I've been more invested in other docs I've seen in the past, but this does take a pretty noticeable uptick once the abusers are revealed. Seemingly serving as much as call-to-action as it does revelatory narrative, hopefully there will be something here for any viewer to latch on to, although at times this feels very leading, bordering on manipulative, which can be problematic. The story is emotional, absolutely, and in the end (as is often the case), an imperfect form of justice remains.

Nothing terribly impressive here. Sure, the story is awful and it's nice to see its subject rise above, but that in itself does not make a great documentary. It's not a terrible film, but it's not terribly compelling or even very interesting either. Outside of the story itself, there is very little substance. Considering the "vast collection of videos" that Sasha had to work with, I was expecting at least one of them to be of value. Glad Sasha got to tell his story. That's all that matters.
