Revolutionary Girl Utena: The Movie

Oh god, the architecture. Art Nouveau, constructivism upon deconstructivism, and a floating garden make Ohtori Academy one of the most beautiful "inner worlds" you'll find in anime. There's some kind of surrealist story and all kinds of silly symbolism going on, but Ohtori Academy itself is the star of this show.

Recurring problem: except in very specific cases, the overstated and hectic world of manga/anime is just not something that I can connect with, however this one is at least a little more entertaining than most, with some fluid action scenes and striking animation doing at least something to counter the bizarre, non-sensical plotting and characters. If you’re a fan, jack up the rating!

Incomprehensible by those who are unfamiliar with the anime and manga on which it is based (and likely also for the initiated as well), 'Adolescence of Utena' brings yet another alternate continuity to the franchise with breathtakingly gorgeous and surreal animation, art design, and musical score.

Beautiful without being baroque. Surreal without being pretentious. Over-the-top without spoiling the genuine emotion. Wonderful.

Gorgeous animation, but both the Utena TV series and its movie make very little sense.

It wasn’t as good as the show (which, I can’t believe was something I liked, but it owned) but it’s still gorgeous and interesting. Also it’s totally the Carrie Page universe of Utena and Anthy is show Anthy come to rescue Utena, fight me
