Sir Percy Blakeney, aka the Scarlet Pimpernel, has left off rescuing the French nobility from the guillotine, having promised his wife never to return to Paris. But the villainous Robespierre and his henchman are determined to get hold of Blakeney any way they can and lop off his head from crimes against France. They lure him to France by kidnapping his wife, a French aristocrat, and sentencing her to death, knowing that Blakeney and his gang will be forced to come to her rescue.

Absolutely instructional viewing if you’ve every wondered where Looney Tunes and The Muppets got half their stock jokes. Barry K. Barnes has the thankless job of taking over for a quickie B-picture sequel but holds his own - there are some nice Saint-like disguises but my favorite is when he goes full English dandy git (the template for, “Stwike hem centuwion, vewy wuffly!”). Probably holds the record for most war crimes committed in a kids’ adventure picture.

The Return of the Scarlet Pimpernel, but not Leslie Howard. But somewhat unknown Barry K. Barnes as his replacement does surprisingly well in the role. Loved the ugly disguises he had! And he was delightful enough in his manner to make it a enjoyable story. Francis Lister as the man hunting him down has enough of that lovely incompetence going for him to almost feel sympathy for his failures. A sequel that doesn't disappoint, even if it doesn't reach the levels of the 1934 movie.

Entertaining costumer might be the earliest incarnation of a sequel 'cash-grab' but it is fast paced, and generally witty enough to skate over its shortcomings. Barnes is no Leslie Howard, but it is great fun to see a green Mason in an early role (with a climactic speech which no doubt helped his ascent to stardom.)
