One night after leaving the paper, sports reporter Erik Kernan sees a gang of thugs beating up a homeless man. He notices how well the grizzly old fellow can take a punch. He bobs, he weaves, he lands a few good ones himself until Erik chases the thugs away, who leave jeers of how they beat "The Champ" in their wake. Erik realizes he has just rescued the legendary "Battling Bob Satterfield" and stumbled on the story of a lifetime. Rumor had it that Satterfield was dead...and yet here he was. Yeah this was horrible. Samuel Jackson's stupid character voice makes me want to watch the movie on mute, but I worry that if I mute it I might just fall asleep. I thought this was a boxing movie yet very little boxing was done in it unless you want to see a drunk hobo fight some college kids. Best role might have been that little kid who cried during show and tell. How the heck did they convince Alan Alda to be in this. Hartnett's ugly movielife continues to be TKO'd by flicks like this.

So happy to finally see this movie. It's a unique, compelling and emotional story, and Samuel L Jackson delivers and Oscar-worthy performance.

A floundering sports writer stumbles upon a homeless guy who claims to be a former heavyweight boxer. The story is a career-maker. If it's true (pluggedin.com)

I almost stopped watching this after an hour. Jacksons character was the most annoying person in the history of cinema, and the cloying "father son" relationship and "down and out Bum makes good" story was enough to get me reaching... and not only for the off button. Once Jackson thankfully dissappeared, the story did develop a half decent twist and asked some pertinent questions about "truth", but ultimately, it was so full of character cliches that by that time, the patient was beyond hope.

Good movie, not particulary exciting, but as the story developed, I got more and more involved into the characters and was curious what was going to happen next and what decisions the characters were going to make. And again, Samuel does an excellent performance. For me he's becoming one of the best actors of this decade. His roles are spread over such a wide spectrum, I cannot think of one film where I didn't enjoy his role.

If anyone likes Samuel L. Jackson as much as they claim to they should see this film because it is the most he has disappeared into a character in quite some time as opposed to be Samuel L. Jackson as Coach Samuel L. Jackson or something to that effect. I'm also a sucker for fractured father-son relationships and moreover the burdens carried and shadows cast by the name we call our own.
