Hudson's covers are great, and they comprise, conservatively, 60 percent of the runtime. Marc Maron is good too. Favorite bit: the 'I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)' jam with the Muscle Shoals fellas.

Jennifer Hudson is great in the lead role in this film. The structure of this movie is no different than most biopics. What makes this worth watching is Hudson's performance. Overall I would recommend this film.

As far as a biopic of a music legend, I much preferred this one to Elvis. Told in a chronological way, with great performances and music. Didn't know Aretha's childhood and early life was so troubled.

Solid, old-fashioned biopic is resolutely meat-and-potatoes in its telling, and rests too much on Hudson’s impressive evocation of Franklin’s vocal prowess; while containing some hardship, Franklin’s life story is not extraordinarily compelling or distinctive in its own right, and the film misses an opportunity to dig deeper by largely skimming over the civil rights era that defined much of Franklin’s career. An enjoyable (somewhat overlong) ride, powered (inevitably) by a terrific soundtrack.

A stilted performance by Jennifer Hudson drags the whole movie down. I was pleasantly surprised by Wayans’ take on Ted White but a slew of B side tracks and three or four reprises of Respect just doesn’t make an intriguing movie where all the socially most controversial and impactful events are glossed over.

What a life. What a voice. What a legacy. Hudson is good and shows her character respect. *Recommendable

☆ Hudson has a great voice for this role, and really sells it. I wasn't aware of Franklin's past before watching it, and it was super sad and interesting to see how her life shaped her songwriting. Obviously there were some cringy bio-pic moments, but that was expected. ☆

Too respectful. Seems to shy away from the hardest aspects of Aretha Franklin's life.
