As soon as the movie started I was overcome with waves of dizziness. The title appeared on the screen, but the letters blurred and came into focus again, now spelling 'Rohypnol: Rear Tribute'. From this point on I remember only vague blobs of color, incomprehensible sounds, and a constant sense of vertigo. It's now 90 minutes later and I've regained consciousness. Now only questions remain. Why can't I stop crying and why does my butt hurt? I... I think Paul W.S. Anderson molested me. Oh god.

Resident Evil Marathon, Hour 8.9: Things seem to be happening backwards, now. We keep revisiting the same lines, scenes and faces - the credits are literally regressing. I missed Guillory's soap-opera-camp Jill Valentine until I looked it up and realized it's still Guillory. My reality is slipping. Maybe that's why I actually liked Alice's psychic connection to her clones, and her Weaver-esque mother complex. But it's like I'm forced to watch a video game. My agency, my will, is leaving me.

What's that, Paul? ...No, Paul, people haven't forgotten about Aliens. Yes, I know it's been a while since it came out, but it's kind of a classic and... Yes, I'm sure people will notice if you steal the entire plot. So unless you have a really good plan for how to make them OK with it, people are inevitably going to compare them, and - Hmm? Oh, you're planning to make it suck. Well, that's one way of avoiding comparison, I suppose.

Pencil thin Milla supposedly reverts to being a normal human in the beginning yet she's wielding a chain with a lock like a fucking ninja spinning upside down kicking zombies in the teeth. Anderson is such a mindless hack he can't even keep up with all the storyline changes to the characters in his movie. The actors must have been standing in the same green screen room reading off teleprompter because that's what the acting is like at times. Pretty cgi but shitastic everything else.

Just got done rewatching this 10 minutes ago and couldn't tell you what the hell happened. This movie of all the movies has the least plot (which is hard to do) and there isn't really any point to it. Aside from appearances from old characters from the series and a couple of video game cameos, there is no reason to care about whatever is going on. The action sequences are some of the best in the franchise, but you've come to expect that. This was a big misfire compared to the others.

This is the first Resident Evil flick that disappointed me. Even though the special effects of the first movie look like cardboard cutouts in comparison, this movie fails to expand the series in any way. In all actuality, it is baffling that this movie is supposed to take place in the same universe and the plot is full of so many holes that I'm not sure how Milla didn't fall off the movie screen.

Absolutely terrible. The acting is awful, CGI shit and the story way too simple and weak. Plus Jovovich has her mouth open way too many times. And when the Gilette shaving models appeared, I just burst out laughing, and laughed hysterically everytime they were on screen. What the fuck were they thinking.. seriously. One of those guys has the face of Ken and the jaw to shave some other Gilette model's face.

Nothing new here. The plot seems to go backwards, that's how slow it progresses. The action scenes are decent but as always, there is WAY too much slow motion. I think the movie would have been half an hour shorter if they just left that out. However, I am going to watch the next installment. I'd like to see a reboot that's closer to the games though.

Resident Evil: Retribution is somehow more over-the-top than its predecessors, in nearly every way, though it's closest to Resident Evil: Afterlife. If you think too hard about anything that happens in this movie, you may be disappointed. However, besides the insane, stupid, manic, silly action that ensues, Retribution makes things a notch more interesting with a very "meta" and twisty plot that may be cliche, but differentiates this entry just enough.

The OSHA report on the Umbrella Corporation is going to be damning. Still, I'm glad it's back into guilty pleasure territory, lots of zippy action sequences, and while the plot is bordering on avant garde in its incoherence, it never actually dwells on how incoherent it is, and every time you feel kind of frustrated by how stupid it's getting it'll throw in some big silly explosions as though it wants to say hey, it doesn't matter, you're here to see explosions and zombies. Not good, but fun.

Paul W.S. Anderson watched Aliens and that's how the script of this lame knockoff was born. Why is Jill Valentine completely useless in the second movie but can beat Alice in a fight in this one? How did Ada Wong manage to break into this underwater base in the first place considering that she is amazingly useless for the rest of this movie? I don't know why I keep watching these stupid movies but at least the end of this one seems to promise that #6 will be the last.

Devoid of character & amoral to its core, but still more visually impressive than many more serious fantasy films -- the Hobbit comes to mind -- this isn't pure cinema, it's pure video game, achievement & special-powers driven rather than plotted or developed. Taken as such, I had some fun watching. If it had been an hour long, about my limit for game-playing, I would have given it 5 STARS!

Wow, talking about tired old formula. Watching this movie is like chewing bubble gum for way too long - flavorless. Slo-mo sequence gets spammed, characters you thought were dead gets 'revived', BingBing Li is as stiff and expressionless as a wooden puppet, and everyone is pretty much reduced to fighting robots. The action sequences definitely failed to excite - you've seen everything before, many times. I hereby declare this movie 'eco-friendly' - it's entirely made of recycled materials.

I think it was slightly better than Afterlife. A lot just didn't make sense. They just added twists & scares instead of plot. It was kinda cool to have a few characters back, but they're either severely underused or misused. Same with characters from the games. The dialogue was pretty much all awful. & when Jovovich & the 10-year-old Engineer are the best actors, there's something wrong. The action was fine, but not anything new. The best thing I can say about it is Jovovich is still awesome.

If you've made it this far in the series, you know what to expect. This isn't high cinema. The stupid slow-motion stuff and silly poses are still there. But also, if you're just into some brainless Resident Evil -fun with all the characters and monsters, then it's going to keep you entertained. Alice waking up in the beginning of the movie NOT NAKED this time around was a surprise. Later on, she seems to wear the most uncomfortable clothes imaginable. For... you know. Like fighting function.

Basically a narrative remake of the original film (mission objective: escape the underground facility!) with the retardation dialed up another 30% or so. Lol at the ending with everyone trying to beat up Michelle Rodriguez. Bumped my score up from 1 to 2 because it was mildly cool seeing Jill Valentine, Leon Kennedy, Ada Wong and Albert Wesker all lined up in the last shot, even though it was missing the Redfields.

Pretentious, near incomprehensible mish-mash of the “best of” of the series is fast-paced and nimble enough to be a fun diversion, especially when indulging in some multi-versing (though the wherefore and why was lost on this viewer). The series has settled into a comfortable and efficient formula at this point, with this entry seeming to evoke video game play (and music) more overtly than previous entries – as always, it’s Jovovich’s intriguingly inscrutable lead which helps maintain interest.

The last 2 films each had an unpredictability as to what would come next in Anderson's gleeful worldbuilding (deserts, zombie birds, powers, clones, bag-headed giants, etc), but there's no new directions this time. It quickly tells us exactly what we're going to see (lots of shooting & fighting in backdrop cities) & delivers just that, plus returning characters we didn't care about before. The explanation for this set-up makes less sense than ever, but Anderson still shoots stylish action.

When I started to have fun with all the nonsense the movie was throwing at me, Mr. Anderson, again, managed to take itself seriously enough to annoy me and spoil everything. This is what he needs to do: Stop trying to be a dramatic filmmaker, stop trying to make Milla look cool, stop trying to make the characters important! It's over! Nobody cares! Just embrace your destiny as a B-movie director and try to have fun!

The most video game like movie I've ever seen. A story that would be stretched thin over 30 minutes gets stretched over an hour and a half of bland action scene and plot holes. Gone is the guilty pleasure the Resident Evil series provides, instead replaced by boredom.
Side note: Michelle Rodriquez plays her mirror counterpart in this movie (peaceful, suburban mom) so that is kind of funny. Although sad that she can't even pull off that role....

If you listen closely though the lines sound like they were written by the guy who wrote the lines for the first Resident Evil game. YOU ALMOST BECAME A JILL SANDWICH. The story was very blah and the characters uninteresting. Oh and they made Leon look sucky when he is in fact a total badass.

Be prepared to sit through the first couple films all over again, in slowmo, plus a super secret bonus OVA where Alice is a housewife (spoiler alert). This is the video gamest movie. Arbitrary reset after the last one, ridiculous explanation for unrelated action setpieces, a stupid mishmash of random monsters. Even the acting seems almost deliberately bad to match the stilted animation and delivery of games. I think fans of the game series hate these movies so much because they show just how stupid the games are without gameplay to bolster the terrible writing. Also I don't get why they dubbed Li Binging's lines, her English is fine.

Resident Evil: Retribution is what happens when you run out of ideas on how to fill a full-length movie. From the mocking 8 minute recap introduction (of which 4 are shamelessly reversed ("GENIUS! *HIGHFIVE*")) to the sordid dialogue juxtaposed beetween languid setpieces of action that gestate into padded ballets of nothingness, everything in here is made for the sole purpose of heaving the runtime above the magic 90 minute mark. Filmmaking as lazy as can be.

Anderson's Aliens (mom saves daughter from monsters) or his Matrix (hero vs artificial world), but it's actually action in his own spatial, physical terms. As we follow Milla through fake NY, Moscow or Tokyo, it comprises as much elements as it can -- from slowmo to rewind scenes, from Wolfenstein-like soviet soldiers to an indestructible Michelle. Milla gains her power back from Wesker in the White House, only for one more stand. Cinema at its most basic -- destroying and recreating images.

Resident Evil: Retribution is a Resident Evil movie through and through. It has a lot of action, a bunch of characters from the video games, some gorgeous visuals produced on a relatively modest budget, and absolutely no depth to anything other than the convolution given to its universe. If you've stuck with the series through to this point, you'll want to see this one, too. If you haven't, this isn't the film that will make you want to go back and see the others.
