Downbeat case study based on the life of Anneliese Michel. Seems to want to maintain ambiguity in relation to questions about religion and mental illness. The filmmakers only do this, however, by departing somewhat from the known facts, a departure at odds with a cinematic style which tends to lead the viewer to believe that an authentic presentation of events is intended. Dubious decision about where and how to end the story. In short, a good performance only partially conceals a few problems.

Not much of a film at all with no score, unpersonal visuals and boring story. BUT Hüllers acting is worth 60points for the whole movie, the best acting Ive seem in a long time.

Sandra Hüller is great in this breakout performance, but it doesn't hold the film together.

Intriguing case study of apparent demonic possession weaves a hypnotic and haunting spell on the viewer, despite some choppiness and scattering of focus in the narrative. This might be reflective of Michaela’s state of mind, or else evidence that Schmid doesn’t quite know how to handle this strange material; it feels like extensive material is missing which would more effectively tie everything together. Made galvanising by Hüller’s remarkable performance (to even rival Blair/McCambridge!)

The most down to earth exorcism movie. Pretty devestating and 100% believable take on the subject that manages to do justice to the difficult and complex real life issues. Sandra Hüller is just fabulous.

Tremendous possession docudrama about subjectivity and belief, which is the exact right lesson to take from The Exorcist.

"Hüller's master class in acting is not only a portrait of a holy creature frenzied by otherworldly spirits but a voluptuous reflection of the pressures that accosted so many women of her character's age, time, and devotions." - Ed Gonzalez

Huller is good. Realistic portrayal of the Anneliese Michel story. Chilling tale about superstition gone awry in our modern times. Also an interesting tale about the struggles of mental illness. Overall though it kinda dragged on and could be a bit boring.

not good production, but Sandra Hüller's acting is deserving acclaim.

The film does an excellent job drawing us into the question of mental illness and possession. The realist approach of the filmmakers certainly highlights the natural and medical side of the equation, but they also avoid undermining the people of faith in the film--even giving dimension to the differing beliefs of the priests. Huller's acting is really something to behold, and gives a strong humane center around which to pose its questions.
