The worst and best parts of this movie are the ones were folks are tripping balls. In between it manages to look pretty, but it also feels very empty with the plot that doesn't really start anywhere, go anywhere, or end anywhere, either. It doesn't seem to have that much to do with the comic, either, so if you just want to watch people tripping out for two hours, this is the movie for you. Just don't come expecting any actual thrills or... you know. A plot.

If you don't mind the story, overall you get something unique in this film

An adaptation of a French comic book series serves as the basis for this obtuse and spiritual Western. It has all the bits that go into a conventional Western tale, but it all seems very strange through the eyes of the peyote-soaked main character Mike Blueberry, on something of a vision quest to understand his own past. Though it's a little underwhelming overall, there's some beautiful photography and several scenes of intense psychedelic visuals. Also, the cast is phenomenal.

Take a stereo typical cursed treasure movie, set it in western times, and mix it with a strictly spiritual version of the slowest rendition of The Matrix; and you have this film.

I never read the comics but hopefully they're better than this. Though it packs a great cast, and even Michael Madsen, who's normally wooden as hell, is pretty good, the movie never comes together properly. Probably due to the fact that the climax at the end degrades into some poor man's "2001: A Western Odyssey" LSD trip set in the old west that basically amounts to 15 minutes of utter visual bullshit.

"It's "bad art," they'll say. That's fine, for the rest of us there's always a haven in the appreciation of "bad art.""

Wild visual effects accompany a great cast through multiple peyote quests. Very cool.
