Like other Mekas films, it's personal footage with train of thought narration, sometimes directly, and sometimes tangentially, tied to what's on screen. The freeform nature can be a bit tiring at times, but this is pretty focused overall, and I find value in hearing him talk about his exile and his experiences upon returning home. I think it gets at some of the internal conflict of living across the world from those you love, and of being part of multiple societies and neither at the same time.

A bold movie from diary film pioneer Mekas. He takes a handheld camera on a Jewish roots trip, leisurely filling up a lot of silent film and later molding it into art through painstaking editing, with intensive cutting and speeding, added music and narration. We begin in the idyllic little village of his birth and move on to darker regions of personal and collective biography. Be patient - it's almost a vacation slideshow at times, but pays off.
