footage of memories is tied up in editing so beautifully that they all look like images of his life flashing before his eyes.

Like other Mekas films, it's personal footage with train of thought narration, sometimes directly, and sometimes tangentially, tied to what's on screen. The freeform nature can be a bit tiring at times, but this is pretty focused overall, and I find value in hearing him talk about his exile and his experiences upon returning home. I think it gets at some of the internal conflict of living across the world from those you love, and of being part of multiple societies and neither at the same time.
