Just before Christmas, Lee Leander is caught shoplifting. It is her third offense. She is prosecuted by John Sargent. He gets the trial postponed because it is hard to get a conviction at Christmastime. But he feels sorry for her and arranges for her bail, and ends up taking her home to his mother for Christmas. Surrounded by a loving family (in stark contrast to Lee's own family background) they fall in love. This creates a new problem: how do they handle the upcoming trial? (imdb)

Aside from the painful (but period appropriate) racism and stereotypes that pop up in the first 1/3 of the film, this is a fine addition to the Holiday viewing dossier. MacMurray and Stanwyck always have tremendous chemistry and the arch of their relationship is believable. After having so much done for her throughout the film, it was great to see Lee put herself on the line for John when it is least expected. Great script and terrific acting.

Warm, charming portrait of Christmas and small-town America, yuletide values spilling out into boundless love and affection, beautifully realized by Stanwyck and MacMurray. It's enough to melt my cold, dead heart. The ending might be contrived, but somehow, the performances and the direction sell every emotional beat. The racism is, well, unfortunate.

Ignoring the absurd plot, makes for a good Christmas movie

Warm hearted and charming Christmas fable finds Stanwyck and MacMurray in a more sentimental mood than their later DOUBLE INDEMNITY, but the subtle edginess Stanwyck brings to the role keeps things from becoming too treacly.

Remember the Night (1940) when Fred MacMurray & Barbara Stanwyck first met? This was before Double Indemnity (1944) and their the feelings was more innocent then the sensual danger of their later acquaintance, as the Christmas flirt between state prosecutor and the thief starts on a road trip home for the holidays. And it becomes such a inspiring encounter that really takes over the heart once the end comes around. Lovely stuff.... with a tear lurking.

Not bad, but somewhat disappointing considering all the talent involved.

Although the set-up is a little corny (and more than a little racist), Sturgis' script has some good humor and even better "small moments" that really say a lot. How Stanwyck never won an Academy Award is baffling; she glows like stolen jewels in this one. Fav moment: the grandfather's portrait.

I love old movies and this was no exception. The overarching plot was dumb but the romance and comedy worked. MacMurray and Stanwyck had surprisingly good chemistry. The ending, well they kind of wrote themselves into a corner and just kind of ended things.

Stanwyck is the tough-girl thief who softens for Fred MacMurray, and she hits every note right. Good thing--in the wrong hands, this could have been a sugary mess. The writer, Preston Sturges, hung around the set and became friends with Stanwyck, which was fortuitous. The result: The Lady Eve (1941), Sturges's best comedy, and perhaps the greatest rom-com of all time.

a great preston sturges script radiating warmth if you can look past the political failings.

A nice, fairly sentimental romantic comedy that is given a clever edge by screenwriter Preston Sturges. Beulah Bondi and Sterling Holloway shine as MacMurray's family.

I was a bit reluctant at first, but now I even promoted this little film to my personal list of Christmas classics.

Stanwyck and MacMurray with a Sturges script, couldn't ask for more really. Lots of great repartee between the leads and a fun offbeat story.

High on sugar, as Preston Sturges scripts often are, but I believe it is one of his best. It has a consistent moderate pace, elegant humor and a lean and modest plot, which I think are good qualities in comedies of the period. Fred MacMurray is no Henry Fonda, but Barbara Stanwyck is mesmerizing enough to carry it. As a shoplifter, she's a blueprint for her con artist self in "The Lady Eve".

Looking for an alternative to *Miracle on 34th Street*, *It's a Wonderful Life* or other Christmas classics, but want a similar feel good movie? Try this one.

Still mostly naive but also has more teeth than the usual Christmas fodder.
