Weird, cryptic and fascinating.

Good translation of the book at first but becomes very dull later on. Agree with Ebert that the cast commit admirably to heightened material.

I was surprised I had never heard of this film given that it's a collaboration between John Huston, Marlon Brando, and Elizabeth Taylor. It's all more than a bit of a mess, but an interesting mess. It's a story about sexual repression and feelings of inadequacy with interesting performances from Brandon and Taylor, all filmed with a golden tint. If nothing else, it's different than most films you've seen. Keep your eye out for Harvey Keitel in his first film role as an (uncredited) soldier.

Quite nice and unusual ensemble drama with probably more psychological subtext than I was able, or bothered, to detect. I didn't care much for the caricature of a Filipino servant, Anacleto.

The film was unusual, but I never got to the point where I cared about the characters.

Jeez! That was really intense, sexually explosive, full of Southern gothic with Freud lingering in it. Brando and Taylor are exceptionally good, risky roles well done.

Viewed January 11, 2018. A weird mixture between boldly experimental and stodgy and mechanical. A lot of scenes where people ride horses as a metaphor for their sexual confidence/confusion. It could be one of Brando's best performances, but it also could be one of his worst. The photography is superb, and the ending is genuinely insane in a way that even the rest of the movie can't possibly prepare you for.

While Leonora triggers the story with her leadership characteristics, Weldon's appetence for becoming a leader puts an end to it. So, could it be taught? Or you are simply born with it?

Utterly fascinating campy sex melodrama elevated considerably thanks to the talent involved; Huston's spin on pretentious 'art' film-making (even shooting the film in a glossy, golden tone) is mesmerising for the most part; Brando's performance is generally uneven and occasionally overwrought, but hits the bullseye during his soliloquys; Taylor seems to be repeating Martha in many respects, but Keith and Harris in support steal the show as an aging, embittered married couple.

Despite its reputation as both as a lost masterpiece or a campy, fascinating trainwreck, its actually neither. Generally a stiff, poorly paced bore and a tepid, dated look at 'perversion'. Elizabeth Taylor makes the most of it though, camping it up with a riding crop, everything else feels pretty blah. There were much better and stranger melodramas made during this time.

One of the most original (even though based on a novel) films from the 1960s. The characters are some of the most unlikable, cartoonish, yet believable. This is a film that can be easily noted as a pointless and lazy exercise in desire, but the genius of it all is - that is exactly what director John Huston wants you to think of it.

Kinky. Not really very good, but cast, subject matter, and Huston's pretentious handling make it fascinating on a minor level.

Someone referred to this movie as "a glorious mess", which is a perfect description. Its chief glory is Brando. Quite a few contenders in the "mess" category, but the crappy screenplay (from a wonderful book) probably takes top honors.

Quite strange but also quite interesting. If you're going into this weird story you might as well seek out the gold-tinted version Huston wanted you to see.

Liz Taylor in the buff, but that's about all this movie has going for it
