I don't care that the story is very basic and the characters aren't well-rounded. This movie made sweet, sweet love to my eyeballs and that's all that matters. An absolute visual treat.

Great animation/cinematography. I was held back from full enjoyment by off-putting subtext and the lurid genre trappings which is to say the means of depicting its characters which is to say an itinerary of pet peeves prolific in anime and oh hey that woman's tits are out ok I guess

Capital R for Retinal Onslaught. Redline is an unapologetic amalgamation of Speedracer on crack mixed with a heavy (healthy?) dose of Moebius influenced production-design. It' also one of the very few cases where I wished for an animated feature to run at least 30 minutes longer, just to flesh out the peripheral characters. As it stands, the story runs thin, but the sheer visual spectacle makes up for it. Give this a whirl if you get the chance!

This animation is fucking janky, purposefully chaotic, and loads of fun. The plot slows down far too much in between both the "Yellowline" and "Redline" races, but when this movie is kicking it, it is fucking super-roundhouse-kicking you in the damn face. Fun movie.

'Redline' is a hot-blooded, adrenaline-pumping behemoth of a picture, featuring a colorful cast of fun characters, an incredibly creative and visually diverse world with colors brimming in every shot, a funky soundtrack, and awe-inducing animation that gives life to the onslaught of vehicular mayhem that absolutely cannot be missed.

Redline is a fucking incredible tsunami of swirling swimming blooming booming out of control colors and characters that's so completely free of the rest of the world that it makes me want to die thinking about it. People say the plot is plain, but they're idiots. The sensory presentation magnifies it to something more powerful than a number of dramas I've seen, because it targets the soul directly. I hope I never have to meet a person who dislikes this movie. I love F-Zero.

Succeeded in redefining my previous notion of "over the top". Awesome style and about as ridiculous as you can get when it comes to the races. The argument can be made that it gets a bit slow toward the middle, but I'm not sure how much of that is normal speed on either sides of Fast-forward. A great...well...ride.

Cheesy and thin on plot but fantastically detailed in the periphery, with great designs reminiscent of Moebius. Stylistically exuberant with lavish side characters-- this was just a lot of fun to watch.

A film that actually lives up to the hype. Ridiculous and relentless, it can be compared to many other movies without being dragged down by them. Highly enjoyable and wholly unique, a testament to the dedication of the man behind it all.

The characters are wafer thin, the dialogue very clumsy and the story completely nonsensical. "Redline" is however a visual onslaught of the absolute best kind. The animation and design is eyepoppingly brilliant, with a clear and wide range of influences. The opening sequence in particular is brilliantly thought out and timed. Some of the later sequences are perhaps, if I'm being very critical, a little too busy and messy. Even so there are still loads of fun moments.

"Redline" wastes no time or energy trying to make everyone happy. It knows it's audience and knows them well. The audience is teenage males with a taste for anime and drifting. It may be a niche, but that's a sizeable cohort of people to be pandering to. This one didn't really do anything for me, but it'd be easily evident if it'll scratch an itch for you. So if you like this kind of stuff, pause your hentai, crack open a Monster, and have a ball.

If you're looking for some deep storyline and subtlety, you probably won't find it here. This is an exhilirating movie about people going really fast, and risking it all in the process. More than worth it for the animation quality and soundtrack alone.

I am very tired of anime-isms in general, but I also like looking at cars go vroom vroom. To put a stop to the anime-isms, I propose a law that every time a female character is put in gratuitous fan-service that a male character of equivalent importance has to hang dong. Equal opportunity for perverts. Or you could just not do fan-service at all.

I understand this movie took years to make, and my best guess is they were trying to figure out just how shitty it should be. they settled on kinda shitty; as lovely as the animation is, I'm evaluating a movie and not an art project. there are so many bizarre narrative threads and vestigial ingredients they detract from the fun at hand. you've got Anime Protagonist and his big titty love interest, they're both moderately interesting, just do Speed Racer.

I was totally into it for about half an hour in the middle there, and then it went with the cop-out betrayal of its most interesting character that I predicted but was hoping it would avoid, and it pretty much lost me. It's probably still worth watching for the tricks of perspective Koike has fun with, but there are also times when what's happening on screen is utterly incoherent (I think a multi-eyed shark monster fought a giant incandescent screaming baby, but I can't be sure) so maybe not?

When I wasn't bored out of my mind by the thinness of the plot, I was irritated as hell by the assholish characters, insipid script, and over-sexualization of the female leads. Just SO not my thing in any conceivable way. The visuals are fine, but that's about all I could get out of it.

The two races that bookend this movie are exhilarating, visually marvelous, and hyperkinetic. They're the reason why you watched this movie. Unfortunately, the dead area between the two races almost kills the whole thing, and really should have been edited down. The attempt to appropriate Frank Miller's "cool" is awkward and sometimes painful. I also made the unfortunate mistake of watching it with English dubbing. Don't do that. Bad dialogue made worse by people who speak English is never fun.

Haphazard plot, shallow romance, futile attempts at character development. But none of that matters! Extremely in-your-face visuals make this very good, but not quite great. JP reminds me of Spike from Cowboy Bebop.

People here are easily impressed: action and animation, 100/100, rest (plot, character, dialogue, art): 30/100. Average, 65. Yes, the art is quite limited in this film (if you compare with Princess Mononoke, for example).

The animation is really great, though that's the only thing the film has going for it. The story is a complete mess throwing everything it can at the screen, the characters aren't interesting and the explosions are so frequent that become very dull. I fell asleep for about five to ten minutes of the final race out of boredom.

A shot in the arm for anime, taking a simple concept (racing) and, through seven years of hard work, creating an exhilarating blast of imagination and charm. In a area of culture, anime, which can be incredibly lazy and off-putting even for anime fans, this is an incredible piece of pop-art.

The animation is reason enough to see this movie. It's slick and stylish, with attention to detail that's uncharacteristic of most anime I've seen. The story itself isn't incredibly interesting, but a lot of the characters are really creative, and I wouldn't have minded the movie being an hour or more longer to develop even more aspects of the story. The ending is pretty sudden, and the way it ends kind of cheapens everything that isn't part of this one aspect of the main plot.

This film happened when Koike took the Wachowskis' Speed Racer, cranked up the weirdness and unrelenting visual and aural assault even further, and set it in the future on a planet that doesn't want the racers there, then added some F-Zero influences. The plot boils down to racing scènes à faire and the characters have little substance, but the film more than achieves the visceral action and excitement it aims for. A visually-arresting, unrelenting skull-fuck of music, action, and spectacle!

The "Wacky Races" of anime, this has all the color and ridiculousness of Speed Racer with less corn. My only problem is that it seems to slow down a bit too much in the middle, and I sincerely wished for more peddle to the metal. Easily Koike's most refined film...
