John Gilbert's first talkie! Looks today fairly embarrassing with broad acting and clueless screen presence. However it's pretty much the standard of 1929 when no one had a clue how to do sound movies. With that said, he's far from the worst in this film. Actually I felt he was one of the best. Conrad Nagel was basically on stage when delivering his lines including looking towards the camera whenever it got dramatic. Eleanor Boardman seemed lost on how to react in her emotional scenes.
