Reminded me of Flesh and Bone, and nobody's bothered to remind me of Flesh and Bone in thirty years.

The film starts off with a number of bad decisions by the characters, which I dislike, but luckily these aspects fade into the background as the second half of the film goes on an increasingly ridiculous ride towards the climax. No one here is giving a top performance but no one is bad either, Cage and Hopper in particular are giving passable effort but relying too much on their ability to dominate the screen rather than crafting coherent characters. In the end it all works as B-movie fun.

Heavy-handed, stale, and just goes through the motions basically. I usually really like Cage, Hopper and Walsh (Boyle not so much), but they're not even so great in this.

The mid-west seems to have become the ideal setting for the modern noir. This is a prime example. The wide open spaces, suspicious characters and American iconography provide the director with unlimited fodder to unleash his creative playbook upon. Cage plays the beleaguered anti-hero to perfection, while the story is fast-paced and snappy. Towards the end the characters become clichés and I began to lose interest in the outcome, but there is still plenty to love in this stylish thriller.

John Dahl's 1992 film provides further evidence that Nicolas Cage (at least at one time) is a true talent. I love suspense-thrillers about simpletons looking to get by who become engulfed in an escalating entangled web of corrupted morals, violence, and impending doom. Much like classic noirs, and the more recent "A Simple Plan," Red Rock West is a very entertaining and suspenseful thriller featuring a great cast and top-notch direction that only gets better as it moves along.

Good little spaghetti... uhh, neo-noir? Cage and Boyle are crap but Dennis Hopper shines in an atypical role for him.

It aims for a spaghetti-western noir vibe, but misses completely. Annoying acting finishes the blow.

Cage, Hopper and Boyle are fantastic in this small town crime thriller about a regular Joe who gets mistaken for a hit man. Sharp little indy film.

Even better neo noir than I remembered. Nicolas Cage plays a hard luck everyday guy, Dennis Hopper has fun as a hired gun "Lyle from Texas". But the hidden treasure of this film is J.T. Walsh as rotten Sheriff. There's a very dark humour that especially Hopper gets to deliver.

A pretty solid neo-noir thriller with great performances from both Cage and Hopper. It also has some very cool visuals with the dusty roads, classic cars, and the roadside bars / gas stations that I really like. I thought it started out stronger than it ended up being. For me, the excitement got lesser towards the end which is a shame, because I thought I would have liked it a lot more! A very watchable movie in its genre, still.

This film has a good script that keeps the viewer guessing. The ensemble cast does a good job here. The director John Dahl does a good job with putting all the elements together. Overall I would recommend this film.

not a bad movie, started off very well. It's a noir thriller set in Wyoming. The weakest scenes had Lara Flynn Boyle (The Practice's Helen Gamble) in them, or had Nicholas Cage shouting random words to add dramatic effect. Sorta tapered off into a typical action movie in the second half, but watchable.

RARBG.

This kind of simple, immensely clever low budget crime thriller became fairly common after "Blood Simple" demonstrated that they were a viable alternative to making cheap horror films as your debut feature. This isn't John Dahl's first film, but he started his career with a string of these that are all superb.

Hopper and Cage light up the screen, but poor and inconsistent decision making, along with an odd lack of urgency, hold it back.

Well done neo-noir flick that falls short of having a specific director's touch that would lead the movie into cult favourite territory. Decent Cage performance.

An enjoyable neo-noir movie with Lynchian vibes, probably thanks to casting Hooper, Cage and Boyle. Maybe that's also what reminded me of the horrible James Hurley Motorcycle Adventures arc of Twin Peaks, but this is a much better version of that story.

Passable film noir that seemed better at the time. None of the stars give standout performances, and it's probably sillier than it really needed to be. Today it is just proof of how overestimated Dahl was in the early 90's.

Great fun movie. To me it’s a fun flic. It’s too far fetched to be a realistic gritty thriller. But you root for the protagonist, and hope he escapes. Fun to watch

A fun to watch high gear neo-noir that doesn't take itself too seriously. Even if the story is a bit over the top at times, Dahl still keeps it tightly and stylishly together: good work. Even if the film is more about noir tropes than character, Dahl still got a solid cast together with Cage, Hopper, and Walsh, but Lara Flynn Boyle's femme fatale was the weak link for me.

Most will draw comparisons to Blood Simple when in fact the film has a lot more in common with Sturges' Bad Day at Black Rock, to the point that I daresay it's an homage to it. This film though, surpasses both of them in just about every way.

"Red Rock West" is not particularly big, complex or aspiring, but, despite not aiming very high, remains pleasant. The soundtrack sets the mood, Dennis Hopper is a successful casting choice and the script takes enough turns to keep you uncertain as to what the fate of those four will finally be at curtain call. Despite feeling a little restrained, it includes a few characteristic scenes that will probably stick to your memory, and that's definitely a good thing.

The film starts beautifully, and Cage is brilliant in this role. Unfortunately the script gets weaker (and crazier) as the film progresses. By the end I didn't really care what happens to any of the characters, but the atmosphere was still kind of neat.

Just how I like my noirs, from beginning to end this thing doesn't let up.
I had never heard of this film somehow, and I'm not sure how it never gets mentioned. I only found it through a 'neo noir' google search!
It's quite the rollercoaster ride and a hell of a throwback to the noir films from the 40s and 50s. Every scene has so much character and so much development that it's just fun to try and keep up. I would use this film as an entry point to get friends to watch the classics.

A bizarre but highly entertaining fusion of western and neo-noir, that delights in its absurdity. You don't cast Nicolas Cage in the lead with Dennis Hopper as a twangy ex-Marine/hitman without a certain self-awareness. Like Dahl's better-known Last Seduction, the wink-and-a-nod take on genre tropes most obviously manifests itself in the plot, which twists and turns on itself repeatedly until it's tangled up in knots. Above all it's just plain fun.

Genuine film noir is rare today, even though it is a genre to which people, especially film people, remain attracted. The consequence of this is that whenever what looks like a piece of film noir is released, it tends to be overestimated. This film is a case in point. But a canny director can garner a career out of it.

Another solid neo-noir from John Dahl with an interesting cast: young Nicholas Cage as a drifter, Dennis Hopper in Blue Velvet -light mode, J.T Walsh, and one of the few Lara Flynn Boyle roles outside of Twin Peaks worth mentioning. The script is fun, efficient and quite clever - especially in the first half. Luckily the film knows to wrap it up around 90 mins. It paints a quite unflattering picture of small town, U.S.A and shares a lot of similarities with later U-Turn.
