This is Wayne EXACTLY how I want to see him: acting like an asshole, and suffering the consequences. As more and more people called him out on his bullshit and/or abandoned him, the more my heart filled with glee. The ending is a very satisfying resolution for his character. And the movie as a whole was just mighty entertaining, with good acting, interesting characters, Hawks' usual polished dialogue, great photography, and a compelling series of conflicts with little downtime.

This is good stuff. Red River has tons of great scenes, Hawks's directing is more than solid, the acting is mostly good, and in spite of the long runtime, few parts feel at all redundant. I thought it was strange how they suddenly tried to introduce a romantic subplot a good hour and a half into the movie, but the way it was all tied up was very satisfying.

I don't care too much for John Wayne but he was really excellent here. Just acts like a total douche the entire movie and then the ending makes no sense at all (accompanied by some of the worst female acting ever). Montgomery Clift is his usual self - wooden, uninteresting, boring. A decent ending would've elevated this for me but because it's such a JV ending it's only good.

Perhaps the greatest golden age western, because it is blatantly antithetical to the mythos. A complete subversion of the Wayne persona, rough and tumble embodiment of the American Dream, for which the prerequisites are violent westward expansion, ruthless capital gain, and exploitation of labor. It's only too bad that a superfluous romantic subplot is introduced late, which dilutes the outright homoeroticism of earlier scenes between Clift and Ireland.

It's fascinating to see John Wayne playing well within type in Red River and yet building a character that is thoroughly unlikable as his egotism evolves into hostile, even inhuman behavior during a long, grueling cattle drive. Hawks delivers a sturdy classic Hollywood western, allowing for some trickier undercurrents. The resolution may be a little pat--and built around a pretty good punchline--but the journey to get there is hearty and satisfying.

A father-son struggle projected onto the epic stage of the Chisholm Trail, in turn representing the rise of civilisation from an authoritarian, foundational phase to a more distributed form of isonomy and mercantilism. Wayne shows he can act, but it's Clift who gives the stellar performance. Some of the plotting is ill-considered, the Indians are given short shrift, and the resolution laughable, but the film is generally well made, and there are undoubtedly complexities worthy of reflection.

Boy, you feel every minute of this cattle drive, with domineering Duke leading the charge. It becomes a true battle of wills when the adopted son takes over, but that leads to friction and a showdown that isn't quite as great as advertised. The romantic subplot could have gone a hundred different ways, but the one Hawks picked seemed a little hokey. Still an impressive western, even as it sometimes pokes fun of all the tropes.

Excellent western, with some fascinating subtexts. Cherry Valance really took a liking to Matt's "gun", huh? I understand! Montgomery Clift is pretty dreamy as a cowboy. Great acting all around, and I especially loved the flirtatious vixen who doesn't miss a beat when suddenly nailed with an arrow. Just kept right on flirting... Very fun flick.

One of Howard Hawks' great portraits of a brotherhood in singular pursuit of a goal. Come for the camaraderie, stay for the beauty: the endlessly gorgeous skies, the mournful frontier, a young and ambitious Montgomery Clift. As a complete package, Red River is a bit overlong and misshapen (not quite the seamless experience I remember from Rio Bravo), but that seems only to add to its charm, and it is shot through with so many lovely Hollywood touches that you can forgive its clunkier aspects.

The direction is damn near sexy at times, and John Wayne perfects the likable asshole subset of his truly inimitable persona. Clift somehow stands up to it, to his credit.

Would have ranked this glorious western higher but the plot does have its flaws and the cattle drive stretches out a bit too much, at least in the 2 hour, 18 minute version available on the MGM DVD. Peter Bogdanovich is trying to get MGM to release the director's cut, in which Walter Brennan narrates instead of numerous tedious dissolves to the "Tales of Early Texas". Wayne as King Lear, Clift, Tiomkin music and 8,000 head of cattle make this a must-see.

I watched this after reading the original story and the first thing I noticed is that they soften all the characters a bit especially Wayne's Dunson. Plus there was some misplaced humor that didn't work for me. The transition scenes kept taking me out of the story but at least they were brief. Overall this was a decent but not great western but I much prefer the book.

A western of epic proportions, it's got a solid plot and a cast, and more cattle than I ever remember seeing in a movie. The production must have been grueling for this one! The black-and-white shots look crisp and expressive and while not all of the characters are lovable, I like the fact that one of the main characters turns out to be kind of an ass and not the hero you expect him to be set out to be. A great western epic, I can understand why it's appreciated so highly.

A really magnificent movie somewhat marred by a mediocre ending. It's the stuff of classic tragedy set the old west, with John Wayne sliding to the dark side under the influence of the same character traits that had made him a great man, and his surrogate son needing to figuratively slay him. The in-film rivalry between Wayne and Clift is echoes by their real world differences. Clift, an actor of the future, challenges one of Hollywood's old-style leads and both prove up to the challenge.

The masculine dynamic here was incredible! Two such different and massive personalities such as John Wayne & Montgomery Clift clashing in a big way for a Mutiny on the Bounty of the wild west. This young punk looked credible against the grumpy and deteriorating old character Wayne portrayed in such a way that it becomes a highly rewarding story. The cinematography was excellent too, but its the characters that makes Red River such a strong movie. First super western since Stagecoach (1939).

Old school craftsmanship. Somewhat overrated, but Hawks tells a simple story fluidly that allows for real smoothness to be achieved in narrative terms. Wayne gives an arguably career best performance as a hard nosed cattle driver, and Cliff is better than usual as his young 'rival'. The romance is clunky, and the Hawksian women mostly grate, but the film strikes a satisfying balance between big and small moments, and the cattle stampede is thrillingly captured.

I feel this film participates in and exemplifies the national myth-making of the United States moreso than any other; with its magnificent iconographic shots of cattle drives framing these White men and their endeavour to conquer the land as a near biblical struggle (notice the Red River as a metaphor for Moses crossing the Red Sea). All this, wrapped up in a fairly exciting cowboy adaptation of Mutiny on the Bounty. There's an awful lot to unpack here if you look, though much of it is racist.

Might not be quite as good as "The Searchers," but "Red River" is a classic. It's perfectly encapsulates the wonder of the American West that captivated kid's minds for decades. It might not be an incredibly realistic view of the West, but this is the reason kids played cowboys and Indians, and it's why they play with revolver cap guns.

Really conveys the epic scale & stakes of a big cattle drive. Excellent character development, and Wayne (who I'm not always a fan of) is great. Treatment of Indians and women is a bit regrettable, but not too egregious. I don't disagree with complaints about the ending or the romantic subplot, but the only scene that's really maddening is Matt & Tess's asinine small talk during the Indian attack.

Excellent western from Hawks, and though the director is often compared to John Ford, this film shows that Hawks' approach is quite different in sensibility from Ford. Where Ford relies on compositions and visuals, Hawks highlights people and relationships. Where Ford brings out the iconic hero, Hawks reveals how the many can become one. The dialogue here is snappy, and Hawks uses his stars in ways that highlight the strengths they bring before the camera.

A pretty average western in the first half but it picks up some steam as it goes on. There's a lot to like with the great rapport between Clift and Wayne, the beautiful photography and a lot of well crafted scenes. Still, the intermittent text cut into the flow of the film and the ending feels a little hokey, though its general sentiment is appropriate.
