*mumble* Hi, I'm John Rambo and I'll be your tour guide. On this trip we'll see some non-white people eviscerated, limbs amputated and skulls evacuated by a surgical hail of bullets. Also, rifle bullets will launch people 15 ft. During the tour I may stare blankly into space for minutes at a time, but don't worry I won't be thinking. Some locals will be brutalised, but no raping of white women, that's just naughty. So sit back, relax as we crack open some people-shaped tomato soup cans */mumble*

I don't think you guys understand. The whole opening is meant to let us know that Rambo doesn't like violence. He doesn't like it! This is basically like Straw Dogs if Dustin Hoffman had used the bear trap on an intruders head and their eyeball had popped out and flown directly into Susan George's mouth à la Evil Dead 2. So basically, way better than the actual Straw Dogs remake.

False advertising. Missions trips were nothing like this we usually just put shingles on a roof and held old ladies' hands while making sure the well water had the right ph balance. Here it's just a constant threat of kids getting bayonetted and gang rape and running on land mines as proxy for a godless universe. I was reminded of a line from First Blood: "God didn't make Rambo, I made him!" and here Rambo saves God. I guess that's poetry, in a Rambo kind of way.

Marking something of a resurgence in Stallone's career and a wholesale resurgence in the interest of a number of action stars who are far too old to still be action stars, a reprisal for Rambo was over a decade overdue. But old or not, this movie still works, he's still badass and just as awesome as ever.

Ultra-violent rendition of "rock-em, sock-em" emerges as the most flat-out entertaining Rambo entry to date, but also the most unsettling in its ugly depiction of brutal war violence. Stallone's work behind the camera scores most strongly here - the carnage scenes are genuinely energising and exciting, and his Rambo is a relatively more charismatic character than in the past. A disturbing but not uninteresting experience, especially contrasted against the benignity of his ROCKY franchise.

It's undeniably excessive and one note, but it's a note Sly knows how to play, and he hammers down on it repeatedly with complete ferocity, resulting in long scenes of brutal violence that have a real visceral intensity due to his formal decisions (intense close ups, rapid cutting, low angle shots etc). If there is a message here, it's not one of patriotism but of the inevitability of bloodshed. In that sense, it's the bleakest entry in the series as well as the most violent. Hobbes on steroids.

Stallone's greatest flaw as both director and actor is the constant failure to recognise his own strengths and weaknesses. The huge sad problem here is the cashgrabbing cynicism coupled with absolute seriousness that force the film to be taken at face value and doing so, it's just awful. I usually enjoy some sadism with my action films but combined with idiotic pretensions and glaringly unironic racism it's not really my thing. At all.

Rambo is the finale that the series deserved following the somewhat forgettable third instalment 20 years prior. It's without doubt one of the most violent and graphic action films I've ever seen. Visually the tone of this prolonged fourth instalment is unrecognisable of the original trilogy. But nostalgically Sylvester Stallone's return as Rambo is a throwback to his action hero glory days. Despite a wafer thin plot, the war zone of Burma is relevant, realistic and gruesomely entertaining.

Better visual style than the other Rambo films, I'll give it that. However that is the only bit of praise I can offer this film. It glorifies unparallel violence, just like Rambo II and III, which is the complete antithesis of first film, but this time around it has the realism that's offered in Saving Private Ryan, at least in terms of blood and guts. Frankly I consider this to basically be a torture porn level of gore and, as such, I really didn't like the film.

This film blew my mind. The amount and intensity of the violence makes this no comic book affair like parts two and three...This is some truly disturbing stuff. Stallone, however, is able to walk the tightrope and deliver a highly entertaining film without being completely repulsive. This is one of the better action films from the 1980s...In 2008 and I feel that's the best compliment this film can get.

Rambo in a 3rd world country during a real catastrophe makes a ton of sense and he blends in really, really well...but it's still nothing new as far as narrative goes. He's still rescuing a group of POWs, which he's done twice already, in the second and third film - and I didn't care about the doctors in this as much as the POW in Rambo III. Plus, not enough one-on-one action with Rambo vs. enemies because he uses guns too much.

It's 2008 and Rambo is as dull and uninteresting as he's always been. I continue to be astounded by the dreadful actors Stallone continually casts (think the drunk girl in "Rocky Balboa") in his late-career efforts. There are some truly terrible performances to behold here, with my favorite being the pussy "liberal" stand-in who gets UPSET with Rambo for killing a band of pirates who were about to rape and possibly murder his companion. Give it a rest, Sly. Ease up on the CGI blood too, will ya?

Pure fucking testosterone. This is a man's movie, about a man's man killing other men in manly ways. Sure, the plot, dialogue, and acting do little to impress (outside of Stallone's timeless macho magnetism), but god DAMN is the violence in this movie beyond the pale. Brain matter spews, bones shatter into so many white splinters, flesh is sliced, throats are ripped, and the jungles of Burma run red with the blood of a hundred murdered bad guys. I am speechless. I am in awe.

This isn't really an action movie but more like a gore wet dream. Stallone's acting is hilarious - he does the same thing in every scene and rarely changes expressions. If you want to turn your brain off for 80 minutes - watch this. If not, just watch the trailer because everything important (and I use that loosely) is shown in it.

Though nothing major on this film, I can't stop myself but appreciate Stallone to end up both of his name-tag franchises on a good note. Rambo still has the skewed perspective on real world politics (this time about the tyranny in Burma) so you have to give up the critical approach as from the start. Boring for the first half, gets fun as the gut level climbs up and ends up with the desperate look on Rambo's face that sometimes violence is the only solution.

The first three Rambos dealt with a soldier dealing with trauma. So, this hasn't necessarily ever been a fun series of action films. But, 80s action filmmaking, at least a few decades later, has a campy fun feel even when things get serious. This removes that. It's incredibly brutal to the point of ridiculousness, but it is all dripping with grime. Maybe take a shower after?

This movie would be infinitely better if it wasn't attached to the Rambo franchise. Without the Rambo name, this is a story about an elderly American snake-trapper brutally slaughtering half the population of Myanmar. CGI blood has absolutely no place in any movie with Sly Stallone, by the way.

Not as successful a comeback as Rocky, but it's extremely entertaining nonetheless. Really, the only issue I have with this film is the same as in all Rambo films: Rambo himself. Is it really necessary to watch children be bayonetted while Sly Stallone's paralyzed face stares blankly, in what I'm assuming, is the kids general direction?! Yes, yes it is, but not when it's witnessed by a steroid driven bad actor...I bet you all didn't realize that his dialogue were excerpts from Shakespeare's Julius Caesar, but then again, how would you be able to tell when it comes from Mumbly Joe here! Annoying CGI and some blatant disregard for the seriousness of war make Rambo an inconsiderate bloodbath. The film, which intended to highlight often forgotten, war-stricken hotspot, Burma, which just doesn't get the attention it deserves thanks to the middle east, tends to be very pro-war, even after starting in a we-want-to-help kind of way. It's screwy, and the action, when it actually begins, does not let up, constantly showing poorly animated exploding heads and gut shots. Crap!

This movie was trying to make some sort of big statement about how war is bad and we need to learn to forgive ourselves and each other. Or something. What they ended up making was a (literally) bloody mess. Rambo kills a lot of (generally very bad) people, sometimes in pretty awesome ways. That scene where kills four or five people with his bow in about 10 seconds was pretty impressive. There's some decent cinematography, but the plot and dialogue leave a lot to be desired.

It's not bad but it's not really good. Violent to beyond cartoon levels and the bad guys may as well wear capes and dress in black, twirling moustaches. Mind you, stepping on a landmine on being hit by a burst of heavy caliber machine gun fire should look like it hurts, and not the usual bollocks of 'just a flesh wound'. In conclusion, not bad but all the depth of a puddle under a steamroller.

Rambo is just too wonderful for words. If you know what you're getting yourself in to, expect to be blown away. Without a doubt there is some of the most violent, visceral action ever caught on film, and it's literally jaw dropping and mesmerizing. The plot, acting, development, etc. are almost nonexistent but it simply doesn't matter. As far as action is concerned this really could be one of the best in the genre. In terms of story I think it's the weakest so far. I also didn't think Rambo had as much to do here. Seems like 90% of his action was shooting large machine guns, with much less of the stealth and close combat stuff we're used to seeing from him, with the kind of variety in the other movies. Being with a team also lessened his importance here. That being said, it's probably the most violent movie, which is a positive, and is shot fairly well with good sound design.

The finest movie of the franchise since the first, "Rambo" might not reach the heights of the original, yet it nails several important sides of what made it what it is, such as Rambo's jungle warfare and cunning as well as the senseless and stomach-churning brutality of war and genocide. The visceral violence might be hard to digest for some, but it serves its purpose. My main gripes are that the action, although exciting, is sometimes murkily directed, and that genre cliches are often employed.

Rambo is a film that makes you feel something: disgust. It's much more about making you experience that than it is about anything else, and because that's its goal, it is a successful film. It also brings the character of John Rambo full circle, even if that circle is very small and not very important. If all you're looking for is another dose of blood and guts, this movie will deliver, but it's no improvement over the first two movies. Despite losing its focus with the second and third installment, Sylvester Stalone rediscovers his roots with the fourth and final installment of the Rambo saga. Rambo is easily the goriest and bloodthirtiest of the four, but does so in a way to enhance the story rather than make light of it. At its heart, Rambo paints a moving character struggle of the beloved First Blood character and his continual struggle to exist in a world he feels placeless.

"Crass exploitation of a serious issue, yes, and also the type of comic-book cartoonishness that the series has always peddled, regardless of the grim aesthetic and tone employed throughout this installment." - Nick Schager

oh man this movie is like Rambo on steroids..i had no hope for this movie..and by the end of it i was completely blown away...this movie is brutal and so much action..Stallone knows his strong points grunting, killing and running and focused more on this than his weak points you know story and acting

Sorry to say I thought this film was pretty terrible, the best part of the film is the huge shootout near the end. Thats about it.

The ONLY reason I give this such a high rating is because when me and my friends saw it in theaters we didn't stop laughing, even after the movie it still made me laugh. THE CREDITS made me laugh even, it was written, directed, edited, etc by none other than RAMBO himself

If you are looking for nothing more than a short, sharp action rush then this is the film you are looking for.

It tries to be politically deep and even philosophical but it's all just convenient window dressing for existing as violent right wing war porn. It is entertaining if you take it for face value and you're in the mood for film bodycounts. Some of the character archetypes are totally superficial including the pederast asian villain, the white woman in sexual peril, tough guy mercs, and the naive white missionaries who get captured only to be avenged by Rambo the killing machine.
