A surreal, hyperactive farce in which a bumbling petty thief and the lady cop who keeps arresting him fall in love and decide to start a family. When they discover they can't have babies, they steal one from a furniture mogul who has just sired a set of quintuplets. The joys of parenthood are soon marred, however, by the difficulties of raising an infant on the run. The none-too-bright couple must flee across the southwestern desert in order to elude the villainous biker that has been hired to retrieve the tyke. (20th Century Fox)

Just a whole lot of fun, really. Nicolas Cage and Holly Hunter play the stereotypical redneck characters to the T and actually make character archetypes I normally hate completely likable. Of course John Goodman and William Forsythe are also great. The movie is ridiculously over the top in a good way and, well, so far the Coen bros. have impressed me.

Raising Arizona is still really funny, and it's got one of the best chase scenes ever. A hilarious fight scene, too. And a sweet ending that touches me a lot, and that Coen style all over it. Still, it's not really a favorite of mine anymore.

Rewatch: I can't quite place it, but there's something about this movie that is infectiously fun. It is very funny, but I constantly find myself smiling at random points throughout the film. I love Cage, Hunter, and Goodman in this and the other actors are great as well. The chase scene is probably the best part.

In Joel and Ethan's sophomore effort, their characteristic off-beat characters are present and correct. Stylistically, it's probably the most mannered they've ever been, and that's a bit exhausting at times, but often pretty entertaining. Crucially, however, I don't find the film very funny.

I can only imagine the casting call for this movie: "Can you scream? Good." Apart from the screaming, it's a decent comedy with some great choices for cast members. It comes close to dropping into "stupid" humor, but manages to stay pretty consistent with the plot. Funny, but I don't think I'll rush back for a rewatch anytime soon.

Bursting with a brilliant and bizarre sort of energy right from its fast-forwarded how-we-met-story intro to its surprisingly touching final montage (both which star Cage's excellent narration), with a wonderfully wacky premise serving as the foundation for some gut-busting slapstick (see the post-diaper heist chase with the dogs; the final baby bonanza) and outrageous secondary characters (see the obnoxious escapees Gale and Evelle; the redneck Glen and Dot and their destructive children).

Straight faced surrealist comedy. Has it's characters but the comedy was lost on me. Not in a flat way, maybe in an overly accessible way, it's hard to describe a surreal comedy as safe but it almost gets there.

I liked it more than I did when I saw it the first time some 10 years ago. Its absurd feel doesn't work as well it does in some of their other films, particularly Barton Fink. But it does have some great laughs, and Nic Cage is in fine form.

I didn't see this until 20 years after it was made. I don't know how I would have reacted to it in 1987, but it's hard to imagine a time when redneck humour hadn't been done to death. Not a terrible movie, but almost all the jokes are terribly stale.

Found the VHS version of this in a box of old, shitty and forgotten films, pinned beneath UHF and The Nutty Professor. Thought, hey, it's the Coen Brothers, it's at the very least worth a try. Well, it's not horrible, but it is a pretty dumb satire with some really stale humor. Just because it's done ironically doesn't make it any better. Back in the box you go.

Strange mood, (a)typical Coen Brothers characterisation - which means awkward and at the very least oddball. It's not brilliant, but it's definitely worth a watch. Some of this is so ridiculous and farcical, but the way that it is presented makes it feel strangely real.

I used to think this was too stupid for its own good, and sometimes it is (Goodman and Forsythe screaming for like 30 seconds straight is too much)…..but mostly it’s stupid in a very smart way. A lot of great lines, Cage and Hunter are fantastic, and the filmmaking is superb, especially in the action scenes. Will never be a favourite Coen of mine, but I finally “get it”. The worst of their best, blending comedy and absurdity, topped off with a rather heartwarming ending (as if the film will be judged differently on a 2nd viewing). I longed for something more, however, but I still recommend it for Coen brothers' fans and film buffs in generals. They seem to have recycled a lot of their shit for 'No Country', hmm...

Raising Arizona is an off-the-wall surrealist and hyperactive comedy that manages to have a solid heart thanks to several moments of genuine humanity and solid performances all around. This is obviously not the zenith of the Coens' work but even this early in their film-making it was easy to see that they had an incredible command of the craft.

While it's not my favorite of the Coen brothers films, it's just so funny and wild and relaxing to watch. It's like a movie that feels free to be as zany as it wants to be, but not at the expense of plot and characters. I especially liked the fight scene inside the house as well as the pretty epic confrontation between Smalls and H.I. Also, a lot of great actors in this one!

For their 2nd film, the Coens go about as far away from "Blood Simple" as they can, making a hyperactive, hyperverbal comedy about one man's fear of growing up and settling down. In this film, they reveal their love and debt to screwball comedy, particularly Preston Sturges. The first 10 minutes of this film is one of the funniest comic runs committed to film. The rest of it is pretty damn good too.

Raising Arizona is one of those movies I've watched a hundred times in bits and pieces but I've never sat down and watched the whole thing from start to finish. I am glad that I've finally remedied that because it is a great movie. As a fan of Coen Brothers movies, I really feel bad for not having watched this movie before now. You can see the origins of their style in this movie; the outrageous moments are leveled out by the very sweet moments in the story. I really enjoyed the picnic scene.

Catapulted into high-octane energy from the opening setup, this unfortunately deflates -- ever so slowly, but consistently -- from the title card to the credit roll. Nearly every scene runs about five minutes longer than it needs to. It only remains entertaining because of the audacious young eye of the Coens and the fun performances. I miss when Nicolas Cage was good.

An almost overwhelming collection of precisely evocative scenes that are as artful as they are adamantly aware this is a bonkers cartoon concocted by madmen, but not without sympathy for its burnouts and trainwrecks, Americana expressionism as a comedy. The hokier parts (the ending is agonizing) drag this into Comedy Central movie territory too often to love though, I just think the core conceit can't float even on a million good setpieces. They're close, shockingly so for the sophomore.

Hyperactive farce indeed! Possibly the best of the Coens "unhinged" movies, this is more fun in parts than the whole, simply because the gaggle of loud, abrasive characters becomes wearying after a while; it's also difficult to become invested in a movie that can't pin down a base "reality line". Well performed by Cage and Hunter, but it's Goodman, Forsythe and a hilariously erudite Cobb that steal this from the stars; surrealistic chase scenes (especially the diaper chase) are also highlights.

This one seems like a recipe for a great film, but I wasn't impressed or even mildly entertained. This is my least favorite film of both Cage and Hunter that I've yet seen. The Coen Brothers made them ridiculous caricatures and robbed them of their ability to utilize their acting prowess. The Big Lebowski is the only Coen Brothers film I've enjoyed. All of their other films are just unnecessary tangents of Lebowski.

I felt like a baby watching this, I was just entertained by the rollercoaster camerawork and runaway banjo music. Initially, I did really feel off with the beginning because the characters seemed so un-life-like, as if their interactions and relations with one another had to be as grandiose as the film's presentation, and some of the humour didn't work for me at all. It seemed to get a lot better, mainly thanks to some wild and kinetic sequences, plus the baddie in this is pure awesomeness.

Super funny and slapstick but also really cleverly written with a lot of really funny lines, this is pretty much the same sort of lighter comedy that the Coens wouldn't really nail again until The Big Lebowski. It''s a nice sort of optimism for the Coens which is cool too. Nicolas Cage being used well is also great, for once he plays a role written well enough he doesn't stick out.

A fairly funny comedy that doesn't transcend that term. The biggest mistake is how little insight is given into the family's situation and how they're raising Nathan Jr.. Too much focus is on H.I.'s individual antics, and because of that the audience never feels compassion for the family nor their attachment to Nathan Jr., thus Raising Arizona remains an entertaining but shallow comedy. The Coens later could combine humor, intelligence, and emotion, but in Raising Arizona it's very lopsided.
