1881: good biography

I just can't stand these lame biopics on brilliant people anymore. This one at least makes the case for an unconventional cinematography -- everything looks foggy green and out of a glossy artificial memory --, but it rapidly gives in to prize-bait worst vices -- expository dialogue, life-covering script that doesn't properly develop anything. Bizarre, offensive flash-forwards involving WWII and Chernobyl (as Jake Cole has pointed out, they put Curie on trial) turns the film into a didactic mess

Its heart is in the right place, but the movie attempts to cram too much into a single film. Perhaps focusing on a single life-changing event would have been better.

Over-directed with a tv movie feel as result.

Well, this film knows no subtlety. Sadly, the director can not create a style that is as powerful as Curie, and just tries to be too obvious, too stylish, just too much. So many unnecessary future jumps, visual metaphores and details. Even in the first half second you see the man, you know he is going to be in some kind of love trouble with this woman.. Even that wasn't subtle. I don't know if its the script, or the direction. Just sad, and a waste.

for the record: this movie has lots of scenes where people mansplain shit to Marie fucking Curie.

Dialogue felt artificial, movie altered historic events to fit a narrative. Cuts to Chernobyl, Hiroshima, other things made the implication the Curie's discoveries are responsible, but she has near zero responsibility for anything of the sort. Pacing is all over the place. Not worth the watch, whether you are looking for historical accuracy or entertainment.

The life of a great scientist told with a slightly pale story, a missed opportunity. Wrong poster.
