Not to take anything away from the child actors, but this is probably Branagh's best performance; a character so thoroughly convinced of his righteousness that he has no need to raise his voice.

Sometimes the best villains are the ones who believe with every fiber of their being that they are doing the right thing, now matter how obvious it is to the audience that it's not.

Easily the most well photographed Australian film; the country looks absolutely exquisite, as does the early 1900's interiors in Perth city. This woukld've actually been better if it were longer to give it a more epic feeling, as trudging 2400 kilometres over three weeks (with no shoes on) ain't no small haul.

The film delivers a condemnation of the Australian government's longtime mistreatment of indigenous people simply by presenting the undisputed facts of that treatment. Noyce's film has a mild shakiness that's nearly inevitable when working largely with a cast of novice child actors (not to mention the challenge of getting a good performance out of Kenneth Branagh), but his assurance with the camera, the shots, with the simple mechanics of storytelling gives the film a fitting gravity.

Rabbit-Proof Fence is amazing beautiful and very well acted. The real footage that we see at the end of the film is so powerful that the whole essence of what you have just watched becomes even more devastating. This is more than just an important film, its a documentation of an ugly and shameful part of Australian history. A must see!

An extraordinary and moving story, told in a thrilling, captivating manner.

Heartbreaking true story of 'good intentions' gone wrong: half-breed Aboriginal children are stripped from their parents to 'civilize' them. Three girls then spend most of the movie trying to get back home. The scenery is breathtaking, but the story is almost too simple (girls walking, brief interlude with the searchers, more shots of girls walking). I also expected a little more with "the tracker," either helping or hurting their cause.

BlurayRip RARBG.

Superficial rendering of important, potentially heart-rending material is a blatant melodramatic polemic, but takes a far too simplistic and “nicely-nicely” approach to potentially explosive racial topics, all the better to make it easily digestible for a high school English class. The three amateur Aboriginal actresses more than hold their own; Branagh’s one-note performance further encumbered by a character clearly standing in for racist oppression, but presented as a colourless non-entity.

Another masterpiece from director Philip Noyce. Really beautiful and true story. Also recommend to listen movie soundtrack from Peter Gabriel.

Heartbreaking true story told in plodding fashion with wooden Branagh, overuse of slow motion and dreary, new age Peter Gabriel score.

A mind-blowing story of refusal to submit to the unjust racist debauchery of "civilization."

Every ounce of compassion and white guilt this inspires comes with about a corresponding pound of suspicion and apathy. Maybe this educated some ignorant people but Lord it's so bland, po-faced, uneventful; stultifyingly respectful and soft-pedaled to classroom-suitable level.

Two hours of handwringing about racist oppression in Australia. While I agree that what was done to these children is a terrible thing (we Americans did the exact same thing to *our* aborigines), this is dramatically inert, making heroes of three children who damn near managed to get themselves killed numerous times just to stick it to The Man in a very minor and inconsequential way, and who ultimately largely triumph due more to luck than anything

I just couldn't get into this film. It had good intentions, but a soft focus on the drama. It wasn't bad, but left no impact on me.

Rabbit-Proof Fence is a nice, small film with good performances and engaging direction, worth the trip for those who love fact-based historical dramas with lots of sweeping shots of the landscape, and who are more interested in the little personal stories than the great historical ones found in all the text books.

A surprisingly dull and uneventful script for a story about children surviving for months alone in the desert sun. Doyle's photography can only carry this thing so far.
