This is basically an old school French melodrama that Melville infuses with noir sentiments. Tho it features a very disturbing subject; rape. It's the decision afterwards of the bigger sister to make the rapist marry his victim (her little sister) that will astonish modern viewers. Lemaire gives his despicable character some devilish charm. Juliette Greco is very emotionless, which fits her characters as the stern older sister but makes her emotions in the climax hard to read.

Em honra de Juliette Gréco (1927 - 2020). Acho que o que mais gosto nesse filme é que ele começa como termina, numa volta circular para chegar no mesmo ponto, plus a mise-en-scène tinindo do Melville. BlurayRip no MakingOff.

The elegance is certainly unmistakably Melville. Not too memorable besides a few scenes.

I really didn't expect this to be so fucked up. Its unrelenting. Along with the murder and rape, its uncommonly saucy for a '53 picture. Melville shows his promise in a few startling flourishes, but for the most part, its a decidedly unpleasant film that focuses on a despicable human being, and there's not much room for redemption, in the character or the film.
