How could a movie about so little be so fascinating? Part of it is the amazing acting from Gong Li and everyone else as well not to mention the great directing from Zhang Yimou. The other part must be that the story and how it's told is both foreign and universal at the same time.

Very painful to watch. Yimou is very good at these unassumingly very political films.

I haven't the slightest idea who decided this was a comedy. It is a strictly serious drama in a realist style, and a miniature version of Michael Kohlhaas. Zhang's stubborn protagonist is highly sympathetic, but the film refrains from villifying her antagonists, officials and beaurocrats. It leaves us to wonder whether her gung-ho personal sense of justice could ever possibly be quenched by the heavy machinery of law, but her determination is undeniably lovable.

"I can get compensated, but not quite in the manner I want? No thanks, I'll appeal that ruling" And on and on goes the film. There's an interesting contrast between personal justice and legal justice, Chinese culture, and probably some other stuff as well. It's well directed and acted, you may like it. Me, I find watching an hour and a half of a woman digging a hole for herself, constantly sabotaging herself with only implied contextualization to be aggravating and unbearable.

No other Zhang film has compared to this rich cultural/character study. Also cemented my strong opinion of Li Gong early on in my film watching days.

A man gets kicked in the balls, and his wife embarks on an epic quest to get an apology. This is what Zhang Yimou excels at: getting you to care about down-to-earth people with simple problems. He's wonderful at bringing Chinese culture to life, you feel absolutely submerged in the environment at every moment, whether it's a tiny village or the bustling streets of the city. The whole cast is awesome. A thoroughly enjoyable film with an ending that will catch you off-guard.

I have never in my life rooted so much for a woman who kicked a man in the junk, as I did with this movie!
