A soundtrack plays folk rock as a woman prepares, at noon, to take her Borzois for a walk. She goes through her dresses, all 1920's style flapper gowns, holding them one at a time, shaking them as if they are dancing. She picks one - in puce. She puts it on, delighted, adds perfume, languishes on a chaise for a few minutes, then goes for her walk. It all has a 20's feel. (imdb)

There's not much to this, but I actually liked it a lot. It had an air of true mystery to it, it didn't just feel like a student exercise. The colors were unusually bold and the silent-movie frame rate effect was effective. I especially enjoyed the music, a couple of odd folk-rock tunes by Jonathan Halper. I thought it sounded 20 years ahead of its time... until I discovered that although the film was made in 1949, the songs weren't added until 1966. Oh well, they're still neat songs.

Nice and colourful. The same footage of the dresses will be used in Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome.

I don’t know why, but there is something so queer about this short, it has a “melancholic camp” aura

a woman dresses up and pampers herself, getting ready to go out, and with a sense of passion. it's fine i suppose, but aside from the hint of a feature film, this isn't much, and to be honest i'm not a fan of the music - rather bland contemporary stuff. okay, the wardrobe was a wee bit hypnotic. edit: man, thought this would've been 20 years later, given the colour and music. editedit: apparently the music was added later. oh.

It frustrates me so much that this film is 6 minutes. I could seriously watch this all day. Also a wonderful textbook example of how a soundtrack can make or break a film.

I can't believe this isn't from the sixties, particularly the music. Wonderful colors, Yvonne Marquis reminds me of Isabella Rosselini in Blue Velvet.

"Puce Moment" is yet another unrealized Kenneth Anger project. The story is slim but it's a watchable short, mostly because Anger's artistic nature is evident.

I've been revisiting Kenneth Anger after not being impressed with the few things I'd seen from him, this being one of those films, and for whatever reason I originally gave this a 35 (I think my clever comment on some other rating site was "More like Puke Moment."). It's really kind of nice, especially with the aid of a larger screen.

Fetishistic, knowingly anachronistic, otherwise insubstantial.

Colourful and captivating. It's simple but the images are so striking and in tune with the melancholy song that it becomes more than the sum of its parts.

There's some interesting sense of despair and loneliness over here.

Nothing special about it. Well, it's very very short at least, so you won't be bored.
